[FONT=calibri"]These are the same engines so was wondering is in ECU mapping for some reason I can’t understand.[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

Steve,

When the 987-series Cayman S was introduced originally I seem to recall that it was slightly more powerful than its Boxter counterpart. I was under the impression that with the introduction of the 3.4L Gen2 DFI engine for the 987-series and the subsequent 981-series cars that they received identical engine tunes, but perhaps not?

Until the latest 718-series, where the position has been reversed, Caymans were more expensive than the equivalent Boxsters which probably explains Porsche's thinking about the power difference. All equivalent 718-series cars now have identical power outputs.

Regardless, any slight differences in rated power and torque will have come via DME mapping and maybe (electronic) throttle restriction.

I as once told this the small amount of extra power was due to a difference in the shape of the inlet manifold, the Caymans engine compartment allowed a slightly less restrictive shape.
This could be rubbish of course

Graham,

I can't be absolutely definitive on this, but that sounds like tosh to me. Although there are some minor differences, the part numbers for a full replacement engine look very much the same for the two 981-series cars, and the PET pics (which show the inlet manifold) look identical to me.
