Different paint codes, same colour?

(I've also posted this in the 944 Colours thread so please delete if necessary...)

Was looking at the table of pain codes posted. 3 different codes for Cobalt Blue?

1991 Cobalt Blue Metallic - LM5N

1992 Cobalt Blue Metallic - 37U

1992 Cobalt Blue Metallic - 38U (water based)

Obviously one is water based but is any difference in shade to be inferred from this? I'm interested as I am keen on this colour for my car.

P.S. Pardon my lack of knowledge but I've never considered that some paints would be waterbased in the first place. What is the basis for this - is there an advantage or otherwise?

The PPG paint system I use lists them all as exactly the same and there are no alternative shades for this particular colour. Whatever code you enter will call up the same formulation to mix it

Quite a few manufacturers have different codes for exactly the same colour and most of the Audi/VW/Porsche/Seat/Skoda group use the same colours but call them different codes and indeed names as well.

Great. Thanks for the quick response.
Full steam ahead now with the work then. If there is such a speed. Car has been in the shop since Nov 24th and still no progress as far as I know. Still, it's not rotting outside the house and I'm not paying for road tax.

I haven't followed your link, but my understanding is water based is all about environmental issues. I believe they became compulsory on new cars around 1995/6, and I think they are less resistant to chipping than solvent based paints.

There isn't much in the link but it seems to amount to environmental issues as you say.

Might be a good place for polishing products though. Haven't looked in detail.
