Digital display in Tacho

Has anyone experienced the digital display in the tacho fading? I noticed this morning when I went for a spin that the display brightness was up and down and then remained quite faint?

My 993 has the computer option and all the functions work ok

Mine went through a spell a few of months ago of flickering between bright and dim, particularly when the gauge lights were dimmed. Then a few weeks ago it decided it wasn't going to illuminate at all. The display is still fine as I can still read it when the light is right or if I shine a torch on it, it's just the back-light that's gone. From preliminary research it doesn't seem to be a big job to replace the bulbs in the gauge, however, to get the tacho out, first you have to get take the steering wheel off. It's the airbag aspect of this that puts me off. Although I read an old post on Rennlist I think it was where the writer suggested that he had an easy method of this he didn't detail it there and I can't find any other referance to it.

Thanks Clyde. Like most jobs on the 993 nothing is that straight forward! Anyone with any tips on removing the steering wheel and air bag?

You may be very lucky and find it is only a bulb, but usually flickering/failed/part failed illumination is due to a transistor failure on the circuit board (lots has been discussed about this on the Rennlist 993 forum and successful replacement of the transistor with a fine soldering iron and steady hand - do a search on their 993 forum for 'OBC'). I was going to try changing my OBC bulb but I couldn't get the bolts on the back of the steering wheel (that hold the air-bag and cover) undone. So that's deferred for next time I visit Northway. I did see if there was a chance of getting the instrument pod out without removing the wheel (some folks say it's possible), but there's abosolutely no way for me - mine's got a leather covered dash so that may reduce the wriggle room.

Almost certain that the wheel needs to come off - 4 Torx T30 bolts hold the airbag to the wheel. I think non OBC tachos are less deep so can be removed without removing the wheel so that tends to create some confusion about just what's possible.

Thanks guys. I gave it a smack as suggested and sure enough the display got brighter! Let's see if it lasts

Bizarrely mine has started working today as well but I didn't give it a wack or any other form of abuse. I know it definitely wasn't working on Friday when I was coming back from work. I cleaned the interior yesterday, including all the gauge glasses and also took the radio out as it needs a bit of a repair but that's it. I didn't notice it as working when I took the car out of the garage to wash it today but after a wash and a bit of external fettle I started it up to take it for a run to dry it off and hey presto the panel was now illuminated. Wonderful things these self-rectifying cars [:)]

Does anyone know whether it's possible to fix the digital display? One of my digits doesn't appear!
