Dilavar studs

Guest

New member
I have just been dipping it to Wayne Dempsey's 'Porsche 911 Engines' (must get out more) and read his comments about the problems with Dilavar head studs.

Does anyone know if 3.2's are fitted with them and if so, up to what year?

This information may save me pulling the lower rocker covers in a hurry for a precautionary look for snapped studs of this type.

yes they do have these studs i'm afraid, I had mt topend done due to several snapped studs. Some people replace with the older type studs but my mechanic advised to use the later Carrera 2/4 type stud.

Thank you. It looks as though the cam covers are coming off.

What was the year & mileage on your motor, and what (apart from the studs) needed replacing as a result of the broken studs?

Mine is an '86 with 107k on the clock. Basically the car was knocking as you sped up, it turns out one of the heads was loose due to the snapped studs and was knocking against the block. After the stipdown the head needed some machining, I also has the rings replaced, all of the studs, oil return tubes etc etc, as well as a clutch. The bill was just under £2500

Ouch. You're good for another 100K, though. Who lightened your wallet?

Bert Gear has recommended the later 993 type studs, part no 993.101.170.51.

Although Big Red is showing no wheezing/popping/banging symptoms, I shall still pull my cam covers this weekend with bated breath.
