Dilemma!

Hey all!
Im in a pickle! Basically advice is needed! trying to repair my 2.7 944 on a shoe string budget, and can be done because of were i work, but basically do i drop in another engine, or repair the original lump!
basically the camshaft has snapped behind the pully, and bent 2 valves (exhaust) as far as we can tell so far!
I can get a 88 2.5 with 80k miles, tested for 350 pound, but would like to keep the original engine in really.
I cant find a camshaft for less than 500, exhaust valves are around the 90 mark and then there is all the obvious seals, gaskets, belts and pullies!
Obviously getting another engine, i would strip it, belt it, but i think this is looking the best option!
Anyone know anywere i can try other than the obvious that come up on the net?

The 2.7 engine does have a few unique parts, valves are much more than on the 2.5 for example so that's unavoidable if you rebuild it. Even though Porsches are strong cars with a good parts supply they aren't budget cars!

As mentioned, the list of suppliers in the faqs is the best place to start. Be very careful where you get an engine from, it's not going to help your costs if it turns out to be worse than the one you've got. I'd want to repair rather than replace personally, if it's possible.

The 2.5 is not meant to be as good an engine as the 2.7. I have driven neither, but people seem to rate the 2.7 much more highly than the 2.5 for mid-range torque, amongst other things, and on this basis you may be disappointed if you were to fit a 2.5. So, replace or repair?

If you are terribly concerned about the originality of the car then repair is the best option. But have you had the head off yet? You may find that there is more damage to be found; mroe bent valves? Damaged guides/head? Holes in pistons ... a known-good replacement engine could be the cheaper and easier option.

Try the chaps mentioned. Also Sulzeruk on here, as I think he has mentioned breaking a 2.7 recently(ish).

Wow! I misread that first time round as the camshaft belt - that's a new one on me too [:eek:]
 
It may have been a typo on the OP's behalf, Paul ... but if not, my surprise matches yours!

(Makes you wonder several things. 1. What went wrong to cause a camshaft to snap - i.e. what else will he find when he strips the engine down? 2. How can the 20mm shaft snap and not the comparatively flimsy rubber belt? Maybe it was a type after all ... )

As I said over on Tipec, turbo exhaust valves fit the head and are cheaper for some reason.

A known 'good' engine may not have very good bores, oh and as you said you would still probably end up doing the belts etc.

Certainly strip it before deciding, pulling it apart costs nothing.

Why not use a 2.5 cam which are cheap 2nd hand until a 2.7 cam turns up at a good price?
