Dim/dip relay?

Got a lighting issue, turn headlights on to dipped and they work fine for a few seconds then go to full beam. Turning on and off again does not change this.

It also illuminates the full beam warning light on the dash.

Thinking a sticking dimdip relay?

Annoying as I am planning on selling the car in a few weeks after I get back from holiday!

Sounds like a bad contact within the dip/main beam stalk. Every time you operate the switch you get an arc across the contacts. This causes pitting of the contacts themselves and eventually the contacts themselves stick closed. The lamps themselves are direct switched so the full current surge is across the contact. Remember this is over a 25+ year period

You did mention that the lamps stay on dip for a short period then go to main beam - This is a classic symptom as the bad contact heats up and then jams closed

I dont have my diagrams here and dont know which year or model you have but I know of a way of shorting out parts of the dip switch to prove this out ...If the problem persists then it will be further down the line !

Id say get another indicator/dip/main stalk and try it first off !

Dim dip relay is basically a big resistor and has no physical connection to the main beam circuit.. Id be very sceptical about blaming this !

But of course I could be wrong - Let us know how it goes ![;)]

Ah thanks for the info.. I was going on the relay after a conversation with an auto electrician but he hadnt seen the car.

I'll see if I can find a used switch to test with

Changed the stalk but problem persists. I can hear a click from the passenger side when the full beam lights up, with the glovebox off.

What next?

As i understand it, the dim dip relay is not actually a relay. I jumped mine out to stop the headlights popping up with just side lights or fogs on.

Sure i found a more detailed guide when i did it but there are some details here.

There is no relay in the headlight circuit at all.

The clicking maybe the fog light relay energising, but I think the problem lies as Donal says in the column switch.

I believe a mod is to put a relay in the system to take the load off the column switch. if thats been done it could be the source of the problem.
