dipping my toe in........

This is my first post on here so treat me gently!

Having recently sold my Fiat Coupe 20v Turbo I've been suffering withdrawal symptoms managing without something different. Conversations with colleagues centred around what you can get for under £5k that has a bit of class, grunt and isn't going to cost a fortune to run. Enter the 944. I've done plenty of reading on here and like the Fiat Forum, found it an invaluable tool. I look after most mechanical things myself and hope to be looking at one or two good examples soon, to see if the 944 could be the fix I'm looking for. At the moment I'm favouring the S2 judging by general comments, but haven't driven one yet.

Any feedback appreciated,

Chris.

I was in the same position last year, sold the MX5 and a year later was missing an open top car. Bought an S2 cabrio and love it! Do it - you won't regret it, but read up about them on here first and have a look at a few first. I do my own work (well most of it), they are quite easy to work on and parts are readily available.

You would not be dissapointed with an S2 by any stretch. There are plenty of posts on here that you can search for to give you a good idea what to look for but whatever you do be prepared to replace the belts almost as soon as you buy the car unless the maintenance history specifically details when the belts were last done both in terms of years and milage. But other than that just buy on condition - I know you might have a favourite colour you might be targetting but if a pukka one comes up in an unfavoured colour then you might have to simply bite the bullet. Hope you decide to take the plunge -happy hunting.

Are you sure you could live without the grunt of the turbo?

Although I dont know how much power and torque the fiat had, so perhaps you would be ok with an s2

A std Fiat Coupe 20VT is pretty much identical in performance to an S2. My ex colleague has one, and there's nothing in it for acceleration.

They are of course easy to remap though.....in which case you may feel the S2 isn't rapid enough for you.

Stay clear of The Dark Side young man as there lies temptation and poverty.

Thanks for your all your comments. The Fiat was mildly modified and I'm not quite expecting the same kick in the back but probably more satisfying handling. Is it fair to assume that the cabriolet falls short on handling compared to the coupe?

Yes, the cab is much less precise, but then again it isn't bad in absolute terms so depending how much chassis flex you're used to it may feel quite good.

................ 6 months on and I still haven't looked at one, things have been on the back burner for a while. However, I am going to get 'something' soon.

Looking at cars for sale when I'm not actually buying always makes me feel uncomfortable, and I don't like it when people come to waste my time when I'm trying to sell something.

So, is there anyone on here in the East Midlands who would be prepared to give me a guided tour of their car including the mechanicals etc? I'd come to you of course.

I've still got to convince myself that the 944 is the thing for me - at the very least they're now 15 years old and if I buy one it will have to live outside, be used daily and therefore be reliable. I'll accept a reasonable level of care and attention but a money pit is not what I'm looking for.

My preference is for a late S2 or turbo with open spoiler - some nice examples on here at the moment but its pointless travelling huge mileages until the money's in my pocket.

I'm Derby way so you are welcome to come over and have a look round mine and have a ride if you like - although she's not starting at the moment due dodgy crank sensor (#1 suspect) which I need to fix over the next week or two. But drop me an email and i'll be happy meet up with you.

I'm in Northampton and your welcome to look at my S2 and Turbo (give me plenty of notice though because they are often filthy at this time of year [])

I'll be at Donington all day tomorrow -bring a helmet if you fancy a few passenger laps :)

Bugger, would have liked that, but had to work today :(

In fact, I work most weekends so I'd most likely fix something up for a weekday, thanks for the offers so far - I'm in north notts, between Nottingham and Lincoln.
