Dirty Oil Cooler

Spurred on by jealousy about everyones working headlight washers I was having a poke around my washer resevoir today. While I was in there I noticed that my oil cooler was very oily and cruddy. This got me to thinking is my oil cooler leaking??? If it is this may explain my slightly elevated oil consumption. I cleaned it all down with clutch cleaner and will monitor it for a while. Has anyone else seen this before? Is it quite normal? Obviously the other question would be how much and how hard!!

I would have thought it would be chucking out oil if the core was damaged Rob due to the pressure on it. It is not too bad a job to get out as long as the bolts on the brackets either side are not too seized in. Even easier on a ramp and also with the wheel arch liner out of the road. I sold a second hand good one not long ago for £40 I think.

Now I think about it more mate you are probably right. One would presume it would leave at least a small puddle on the floor whilst idling at stand still. I will run it at high idle tomorrow and have a good look at it. The car has had power steering leaks in the past and this may well be a by product of that.

Be sure to let the oil being hot. The oil flows through the cooler when its temperature raises to 95° or 105° (celsius of course)
