Dirty stuff on CD

Anybody cleaned the optical head on their CD changer? I put a CD cleaning disk in to the disk carrier but I get a "no disc" message on the PCM screen. I tried it a couple of times but still don't know if anything occured as I used the cleaning disk purely a a 'houskeeping job' and was not experiencing any degredation on the playback of a CD.
