Disaster or not a disaster, that is the question.

I have been an eejit and got my tappets mixed up, does this spell doom for my valve train when reassembled.

It happened when I removed the cam box and most of the tappets fell out and I coundn't tell where they all came from.

On a more positive note I have found the balance shaft belt loose and way out on the timing marks, the crank balance belt pulley badly worn where it fits the shaft and the main crank bolt so loose it came undone without applying any torque. This has all come to light as part of my quest to cure all the oil leaks before we get the driveway done next month. I reckon it could have been valves meeting pistons in another thousand miles or so.

Hi Jim,

I hope I am not the bringer of bad news, hopefully you will not have any problems. I had 3 valves replaced in my head recently (which had previously been nice an quiet). The local garage that did it mixed up the tappets and I now have a very tappety engine. Obviously mine is a 16 valve so if you replaced your tappets it would only be half the price mine would have been. Hopefully yours will remain nice and quiet when you reassemble the head.

I am told that the reason the tapping starts when the tappets have been mixed up is for how many thousands of miles they have been in the engine they have developed a wear pattern with the cam lobe.

going on the above i would upgrade the cams to a higher lift pair, new tappets and a jolly good skimming for good mesure did you know you can partly gas flow your own head......all it takes is a bit of time and patience..

Piper do a cam for the 924, I'm not aware of an upgrade for the 944. My understanding is Porsche produced an engine that was pretty much at its optimal performance and there is little that can be done with the top end on a Lux to make much difference.

Head work does show some improvement on a Turbo but you are dealing with higher velocities. I do know of modified heads that have produced less power than the standard head.

Porting and polishing might gain some advantage but I believe it will be in single figures on a Lux.

You might want to speak to Lodge Motorsport who prepare a lot of 944's for the 944 Series. If there is anything that can be done to a Lux engine they would know.

Or EMC - Kevin Eacock (?) they prepare 944s for Class 4 (?) of the Open series - a 944 only class - and are supposed to get about 190 bhp from the 2.5 lux engine. There was an article about thir cars & engines in 911 & Porsche World, a year or so ago.

Dave, my thoughts are that what will make the tappets tap, is if they are not working correctly due to getting air in and not compressing and expanding correctly and thus not maintaining contact with the valve stem and cam lobe. This might be because there is oil leakage from the oilway past the tappet due to it being in a different bore. The surfaces where the tappet contacts the valve tip and the cam lobe appears perfect.

Based on some of the stuff I've dug up on the interweb forums, it seems you wouldn't be able to fit new tappets without fitting a new cambox, valves and cam. Is this right, does anyone have experience of fitting new tappets in an old cambox etc.

Hopefully she'll be back on the road in a week and we will see if I've been lucky or not.

I spoke to EMC around 2 years ago with regards to performance gains on the Lux. I was told by them that mainly by increasing fuelling 190 bhp is techincally possible but at major fuel economy sacrifices.

I had one tappet that has loud on start up, Replaced it when I did the valves.

It was obvious which one it was as it was the only one I could compress with my fingers.

Only replaced one, cost £30
