Hello every peeps,

Haven't used the old girl in anger (car not wife) for a while (at most one trip out a week - again, car not wife) as can be attested by lack of attendance of Cotwolds Rally (sob) and Scotland (much sob [:(]) this year. Just had a service at Autostrasse and MOT done - which it passed with flying colours - however went to take a joy ride to Sainsburys tonight and got a most unusual and unwelcome response upon trying to turn the engine over. Every light on the dashboard started flashing, the windows kept dropping (as though door was being opened), radio came on and off, and all exterior lights kept flashing on and off. "Strange" thought Carl, as he donned flares and had 70's flashbacks, "what could this mean"? Amidst all this I got a sharp 'rapping' sound (and I don't mean like fiddy) from the back end like the starter motor has indigestion. Can anyone shed light? Has my battery died?

low power on the battery - it throws uo all sorts of electrical glitches and the rata tat tat on trying to start the engine is the real tell tale - probably needs good charging, and at least a 30 minute run out.

My money would be on the battery or the ignition switch. The switch has a nasty habit of breaking up inside and causing all sorts of strange electrical problems. You can get the battery checked at any battery place. If it is the switch, take a look at the Technical section of the 996 forum, as there is a DIY there. [;)]

Thanks guys, I'll try replacing the battery first. I was taken aback by the weird activity - it was like I had a poltergeist. I would have expected things to be dead if the battery hadn't enough charge, so the window flapping disco flashing thing puzzled me a bit ...

If it still misbehaves then ask the OPC to perform an exorcism...[;)]
