Disconnecting Battery

TRW40

New member
My battery seems to be gradually fading to the extent that it will not turn the engine over after a couple of days. I have been using a battery maintainer but think it is time to invest in a new battery. I recall a Bosch battery being recommended in previous threads on the subject of batteries but will search the forum for more details before making a purchase. However, perhaps you could let me know whether disconnecting the battery has any unpleasant consequences - I am thinking in particular about the need to reprogramme the alarm or such like. Many thanks. Tim

Thanks Maurice

My car doesn't have any aftermarket equipment. If I do change the battery is it as simple as disconnecting the old and connecting the new or are there other issues such a reprogramming the PA1000 alarm?

Tim

It is an easy switch and the battery you want is a Bosch Silver which should not cost any more than £40.

Ah forgot about the radio, but as I have my code not a problem. With regard to the alarm I found that it would immediatley go off when you reconnected the terminals, so have the alarm fob handy!

Hi,

I Have disconnected my battery several times for various reasons and never had a problem even tho it has an after market alarm fitted (Much better than the PA1000[:)])

Just remember to put the clock right[:D][:D]

Thanks for that chaps. Good point about the radio Maurice - I shall check the handbook for the code before disconnecting!

Piece of cake, TRW40, but don't forget to connect the little clear plastic breather tube on the front side of the battery (as you view it), before boxing up.
nb my handbook asked me to idle the engine for 10 minutes after battery disconnection, to enable the computor/ECU to re-acquire all the data. There was no negative effect on alarms/radio when I swapped mine.

To preserve ECU and radio settings when removing the car battery, I got a device from Halfords (a transformer basically), one end of which plugs into the mains and the other into your cigarette lighter. (Before using the device, make sure the cigarette lighter is connected, you may need to turn the ignition key, otherwise you'll be wasting your time!). Cost about £15.

Hi all. So I replaced the battery today - the old one (nearly 4 years old from Halfords) has lost the ability to hold its charge - at least I hope that is the case and I do not experience the same problem with my new battery. I would have bought a Bosch Silverline (recommended on previous thread), but my local car store does not stock them so I purchased a Banner 67ah - Maurice mentioned getting a battery with at least 65 ah on a previous thread so I am hoping that will do the job. No complications as far as I can see - an alarm in the engine bay went off - not sure what that is about, and then the main alarm went off when I reconnected but that switched off with the remote as usual. I have a sony cd/radio with a detachable front so there was no security code to worry about. Thanks for all your comments.
