Discs and pads

So, after a trackday at Bedford on Monday I'm looking at new discs and pads, probably just on the front. I only do two trackdays per year (max) so is there anything to be gained by fitting non-standard replacements?

There was another 968 at Bedford with drilled dics but I never got round to asking the fellow what make they were. Any recommendations?

Big subject!

in my experience there is no advantage with drilled discs at all for track use, this is because modern pad materials work well with plain discs. The other downsides of drilled discs are the extra cost and the fact that they are prone to more severe cracking & ridging after track use. The single upside is they look a bit more bling!

My opinion is to buy the cheapest plain discs you can find ......... and then add in some high performance pads. My favourites are Performance Friction in their '97' material. Nb this pad is not too hard and works well with the plain discs.

You should run high temperature brake fluid as well, I would not stint on this and go straight for Castrol SRF React fluid, yes it is expensive but is so good that it hardly ever needs bleeding and has a very high boiling point.

For my info, are you running std or MO30 front calipers?

sebros seem to be the standard replacement these days

It is what I have been using for many years now, last time I bought them the cross drilled ones were not any more expensive so plumped for those but as Paul says it's a waste of time, they just don't last as long as plain disks but don't seem to give any advantage.

The calipers are standard but recently refurbed.

Pagid blues (the fast road ones, not the out and out track ones) have been recommended too but there seems to be a lengthy and complex bedding in process required with these in order to avoid excess squealing on the road. Does this apply to the Sebro or Performance Friction pads?

Also, can people suggest a supplier for their preferred pads and the Castrol SRF React (I've had this stuff recommended elsewhere so good to have that backed up here)
 
Have a look on ebay for the SRF.
Ive had lots of liters off there... Certainly not the £40 odd that demon theives are asking...
Have you got some braided hoses fitted aswell, as they help the pedal feel...
Cant realy suggest a supplier for the pads, but if your after a set of the Pagid blue track/race pads i have a spare set.[;)][:D]

Standard brake hoses at the moment. Might consider braided if the originals need replacing but seems like a big expense for one or two trackdays a year.

Thanks for the offer of the pads but I've already secured some via another route...

No probs.

The braided hoses arnt that expensive. I seem to think around £50-£60 a set. They do make a difference even on normal driving roads....
 
Oh well, enjoy! I was going to offer you a set of as-new Pagid Yellows. When I had my callipers replaced at EMC they fitted Sebro plain front discs (rears were OK) and the other set of Yellows I'd acquired, plus new ATE Blue. The car already had braided hoses. The Yellows hardly ever squeal.

I've been totally happy with this set up for road use and the occasional trackday. They bedded in on the way to Oulton and then did many laps very satisfactorily. I haven't driven behind the MO30 brakes but doubt that for the odd trackday they're needed. But having had a 964 RS nearly arrive in my rear end when its brake fluid boiled I do think the right brake fluid is essential! I think he hadn't enjoyed having to let me through........
