'Dissolving' Rev Counter LCD

Hi,
This is my first ever post on the forum. I have a Gen 1 Tiptronic 997 with an unusual problem, I believe. If anyone can help, I would be grateful.
The problem is the LCD display at the bottom of the Rev counter is gradually 'dissolving.' The only way I can describe it is like a random worm that gets bigger by the week. My local OPC confirmed that the LCD was effectively self destructing. A replacement (the entire instrument cluster) would cost approx £1,500 + VAT. The whole job including fitting - £2K!! Therefore, I headed to ebay and found a used item with white dials which I thought would also be an improvement. Unsursprisingly, the OPC is not permitted to fit a used item. I've talked to a local independent Porsche specialist who says that there could be a real problem fitting an instrument cluster from another car because of the coding for each dial. Confirming the mileage status with Porsche might also be an issue. They suggested I could end up creating more problems and that the easier route might be to have the faulty Rev counter repaired. Obviously, I've bought and paid for the replacement and although it was nothing like the cost of a new one, I would ideally like to use it. Does anyone have any experience/advice relating to fitting a used instrument cluster from another car?

Hi,

Welcome to the forum.

There are many specialist engineers that should be able to help you with your instrument cluster. You could do a google search for someone near to you or try Speedy Cables, http://www.speedycables.com. They have a wealth of experience wth this sort of thing.

Good luck. Hope to see you at a some 997 Register events in the future. [:)]

Merry Christmas.

Clive.

Sorry to hear our OPC wouldn't fit the replacement cluster. There are loads of those clusters sold on ebay so someone must be fitting them.

Geoff - I tried replying to your PM, but it isn't enabled in your profile!

I don't see any reason why the second hand cluster could not be recoded to match the options fitted to the car. I have done this on my Cayman when I added cruise control. The white dials shouldn't be a problem, as there is an option for that when coding.

As has been said, the only thing the PIWIS won't do is change the mileage in the cluster, but it could probably be done by a "mileage corrrection" company.

If you would like me to try it with my PIWIS, I would be happy to have a go. If you need instructions for changing the cluster, drop me an email.
