how can i check the distributer belt on my 964.the car was serviced by northway in may and they fitted new distributers and rotor arms, also a vent kit, would they have checked the belt?

Andy,

If Northways fitted a new dual distributor then the belt is an integral part of that assembly and would, therefore, be new as well.. To change the belt the distributor assembly has to be taken apart. OPCs won't change the belt - they will only fit new/exchange distributors. Even if the distributor wasn't changed someone with Ray Northway's reputation would, I'd imagine, check it at least during a service.

Do you really mean "distributor" caps?I had ourC2 12K serviced at Unit 11,Warrington and asked John to replace the drivebelt;he also replaced the caps and rotors(something I would have done myself) and he gave me the belt afterwards. It was almost split but was thought to be the original. This was at 85K miles and I fitted the breather kit myself 4.5 yrs ago.The beltwas only£9 or so.I would expect a main dealer to check it at a service.
John Miles website has a piece about replacing belts.

Give Northway a ring!

Really, you have to have a good enough understanding with someone looking after your car that a call of this nature will not cause any offence. I do not have any personal knowledge of Northway, but I have seen the name around for many years, so I assume he is a Good Guy.

I have used the services Tony Greatorex, who is very skilled and extremely consciencious, to maintain all four Porsche cars I have owned. Over the last twelve years or so, there have been several occasions on which I have called him and asked had he done this or that. Of course, mostly he had done it, and when he had not, there was a reason. Never, did I get any feeling that he resented my asking, and given the length of time we have dealt with one another, I think that this was the right conclusion.

Anyone who would mind you asking the question probably has something to hide and may be worth avoiding. I bet you find that Northway will give you the answer that you are looking for and simply consider your question as nothing but an informed query from a consciencious Porsche owner.

Im almost sure that if you had new dissies installed that you would also have a new belt as its only a few pounds.
Ask Ray N. if it came complete with belt to be certain
