Distributor Belt Change

Has anyone ever tried to change the dizzy belt before?
How difficult is it?

I understand that Specialists and OPC's only change by renewing the whole double unit. Does anyone know any different? Or any ideas of a price for getting just the belt changed?

I find it hard to understand that perfectly serviceable items would have to be replaced for the sake of a £6 drive belt [:mad:]

This subject has been beaten to death on the Rennlist forum - see http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/forumdisplay.php?f=59 and do a search for "distributor belt".

General opinion seems to be that anyone who WILL do it seems to charge around the £150 mark. There's quite a lot of labour involved to dismantle the distributor and re-assemble it. It's also awkward to do yourself unless you have the facilities to do it - like bench with a suitable vice, suitable drill (ideally bench stand) to drill out the retaining pin for the drive gear etc. etc.

Those who have attempted the DIY approach have generally said it was difficult the first time but easier on subsequent times (how many times do you NEED to change a dizzy belt I ask myself???).

It's very much a case of what facilities you have and how confident you are to undertake it. Personally, with no bench or suitable bench tools, I'd leave it to someone else. I'm afraid I have no experience of WHO might do it since most of the independents (and certainly ALL OPCs) will prefer to sell you a refurbed complete dual distributor.

Maybe someone else might have had the job done.

I think that as it's quite a long job, and I don't fancy it myself, I'll probably go for a refurb'd unit.
