Distributor drive belt failure

Anyone else read Tippler's piece in '911& Porsche World' this month? Apparently the distributor drive belt on his 964 broke which led to a fairly spectacular engine failure complete with a fire and a broken crankshaft.
Having never checked the dizzy belt on my 964, this might be a good time to do so...
Can anyone out tell me how easy it is to check please?
