Distributor screws

I've looked at removing my distributor caps and have found that the cross head screws are extremely tight,I've noticed that they have locking washers under them,is there a knack to removing them or is just brute force and luck?

Brute force. If it's the star washers they do sometimes 'dig in' to the plastic/bakelite a bit if tight in the first place...

Soak them with WD40, then brute force the next morning BUT DON'T burr the heads off! Good sharp screwdriver of the right size, located in the screw and press good and hard as you unscrew.

The best tool is a screw driver bit fitted to a socket wrench.

+1 ....... ensure you keep the driver bit engaged in the screw and it will come out a treat.

Removed the screws today with no problems, all it took was a new cross head bit,a ratchet with extension and a 16 stone son pushing on the ratchet.Dead easy, don't know what all the fuss was about.
