How do you know when the drive belt to one of the distributors has gone? 600 miles ago, on a French autoroute at about 80mph (in driving rain) the engine lost power momentarily. When it cam back in, the tiptronic went into safe mode: 4th gear and warning light on dash. Stopped car, had a look - nothing visible. Started engine: no problem apparently, warning light was out and car seems to have performed faultlessly since apart from the speedo needle flickering for another 100 miles or so. Might my 2nd distributor drive belt have snapped?

Distributor trouble?

What you need to do is pull the centre lead out of the top distributor and start the engine. If the engine starts and runs then the belt is still connected if not then its broken. Also whilst you are looking in the area check to see if you have got a vent kit fitted which should be a plastic pipe coming from the distributor and terminating in the black plastic pipe on the left. If not it would bea wise move to get one fitted as it is the build up of ozone from all the sparking which rots them in the first place.
Hope this hepls.
