DIY 12k Service

My turbot is due for a 12k service. The parts from Bert are about £45.

Is it a pain in the arse job?

I have just looked in the book and the things that look a bit dodgy are a new fuel filter (where the hell is that) and changing the oil in the diff.

I dont mind spending a day weilding a few spanners but my muck an bullets days are over.

Any comments chaps.

think the fuel filter is at the rear, you can see it behind the wheel on the drivers side (rear wheel), the only reason I even know this is that the other dat took the rim off and (after just buying a service kit, that included the fuel filter) see a new fuel filter :(

Fuel filter on my S2 is overdue for replacement, 'cos I can't shift the old one. Connections are mighty stiff, but it's easy to get to, just as John said.

Oil in the diff/transaxle - not hard, but make sure that the fill plug is not jammed solid before draining the old stuff ... when was it last changed? It doesn't need doing every 12k miles. Every 50k or 60k more like.

The rest is pretty easy on the S2, and I can't imagine that the Turbo(t)'s are that much harder in this respect.

Oli.

If you have the original filter then definitely replace it as you dont want a blockage or restriction making your engine run lean when on full booost, also if its the original filter (or an old replacement) then be prepared to have to replace the hoses to and from the tank as the filter unions are normally rusty and you should consider replacing them anyway as they will be old and possibly perished to a degree.

thats a very good deal from Bert if it includes air, oil and fuel filters and plugs ![;)]

I wouldn't advise changing the fuel filter unless you are having fuel delivery problems. It could cause further problems if the fuel pipes fracture or the threads strip etc . Why risk it ? if it ain't broke etc

It's supposed to be changed every two years or 24k miles. If it is changed regularly then you will have no problems getting the old one off

true but if it hasn't been changed for years you could be opening a can of worms.

The only problem with the fuel filter is that as you crack the nuts open, the fuel runs down the spanner & down your arm [:D]

IIRC you'll need 2 x 17mm spanners (or it may be 19 - a while since I did one)

Gearbox oil is fairly easy if the plugs (17mm allen socket) will come out - on one car I had to have a nut welded to the plug to get it loose. It's not the nicest of jobs, lying on your back squeezing gear oil into the filler hole, & it helps to have nice small bottles with extending fillers that you can get up past the exhaust & get some help from gravity. I guess mine needs doing soon as it's over 2.5 years since it was last changed

Cos it`ll be old and full of crud so theres a good chance the flow rate is marginal. If its designed to be replaced then I recommend you do so for, as previously mentioned, you dont want it restricting fuel flow and therefore pressure when on full boost or the hoses bursting or collapsing (also restricting fuel flow)

Thats reminded me of the dubious pleasure of DIY servicing .Think I'll shove mine in the garage lol [:D][;)]
