DIY Engine Oil Change Procedure

I am taking the advice that changing the engine oil @6K miles between annual services is a good thing.

Anybody know a link on any of the forums where it gives instructions on how to do it correctly ?

Thanks

I can't be specific for a 964. However on www.rentech.org/forums I found an excellent procedure for my GT3. In preparation you'll need to be happy that you can undo your oil filter and that you have the necessary washers (they might be called slipper rings). You'll also need to know the correct torque settings.

It looks like the 993 uses the same oil filter wrench that's used on a 996. The website that Maurice has pointed you to shows two different types of filter wrench. The very last picture shows an aluminium one (which I think is the one that most Porsche workshops use). The very first picture shows an alternative (also used in workshops) made by SnapOn. I bought the SnapOn one (black) - it's reference is FW7614 (for 76mm across flats and 14 flats I think) - I bought it from their website. Make sure you know what torque figure to use on the filter wrench (my 996 filter cap has it written on it - very sensible).

Maurice,

I don't intend to skimp on the service and my annual miles are around 14K so it will be 10 monthly intervals for that !

Seen a lot of debate on oils, and have concluded (rightly or wrongly) that 10-40W semi synthetic is better for older engines ?

I am sure there is a lot of personal opinions on this subject though.

How many of you out there do change your oil half way through the annual service period ?

I get my oil changed every 6k, along with a general check over the car.

Full service every 12k.

Mind you, I don't do the mileage that you do.

I'd only use Mobil 1 (or better). I had a 3.2 and always used Mobil 1. The engine was bone dry during the 7 years I owned the car. If you're a low mileage user I'd be tempted to leave it in there for two years (just like you can on the service schedules of cars built for MY04 onwards).
