DIY Exhaust Heat Shield

My heat shield is rattling again - is it a DIY job to fix, or do I need to take it in? (OPC fixed it last time).
 
It's an easy (if a little fiddly) DIY fix. About £6 for each "set" of fixings- 3 each side, but I bet only 1 or 2 each side have gone [;)]
 
I'm afraid not Carl - but you really shouldn't need any. The fixings consist of a 1/4-turn fastener ( a bit like a Dzus fastener sort of thing) a thick washer, and the clip that the fastener fixes into.
All 3 tend to corrode (fun eh?) so you'll need one of each to make a set (3 sets per shield). You will see how they are fixed when you worm your way under the back [;)]

I've only done it once. 1 side had 2 falling apart, and the other 1. Good job I bought 3 sets [:D]
 
I used 8mm (or was it 10mm?) bolts with proper nuts and large washers all in stainless when I did this job on my last car, the Porsche thing's just rust away.
The cats were off when I did it so I don't know how difficult it is with them still fitted to the car, but I will have to find out soon because one is rattling on my new car[:mad:]
 
Thanks Tony - I've got access to the parts catalogue, problem is I've not spent much time under the back of the car so I'm not overly familiar with it. I can see two sets of possible bolts - 900 378 022 09 and 900 378 175 09. Which ones?
 
Ok, I think I left things a bit late and one of the little blighters (heat shield) has fallen off. Question now is how serious a problem is it? Am I about to suffer imminent bumper meltdown or can I use the car until I can get it fixed?
 
I am running without both heat sheilds at present. My thinking is thus , both heat sheilds were rusted through, they can't have been sheilding much heat for some time and nothing untoward has happened to the bumper (there is an awful lot of heat resistant sheilding on the bumper itself. I will replace mine when I can but it won't be for a while yet. I am very tempted to make up my own out of rhicker steel when i do. I don't know how much Porsche charge for the shields but i hope it's reasonable as these seem to have a certain life before rusting into oblivion!
 
Thanks Laurence - think I'll leave it a bit. To be honest my back bumper is a bit knackered anyway and needs replacing so it's not the end of the world if it gets a bit of fire damage ...
 
The heat shields on the Boxster are on the catalytic converters. These are actually further inboard than the exhaust (and therefore further away from the bumper). It's the rear boot that will suffer I think.
 
Yes Mark they are closer to the rear boot than the bumper (in a sort of no mans land). I am not suggesting that anyone does this long term.Porsche put them there for a reason. But as a short term measure especially with the current cold weather I have'nt suffered any additional problems either to the bumper or the boot floor, which is also covered in a heat resistant material. I should note that I had previously screwed them back on in the same way as Porsche had. But the heatsheild itself had rusted through so there was nothing to screw to. They had probably been like that for several months at least (between services). Given that I service the car myself i guess i look under my car more than average so there well may be some very rusty heat sheilds out there. No damage had occured whilst they were in that particular state. And has not occured Since their removal. I would not want to sit in a long traffic jam with the engine running though just to be on the safe side!
 
I was more replying to Carl's post - where he says he doesn't mind his back bumper catching fire ( [:D] [8|] [:eek:] [&o] )
 
Hey - bumper fire, boot fire - what the hell. Porsche flies down the road with fire spitting out of it's arse - impressive, no?
