diy oil change.

Just finished my 1st diy oil change,it wasnt too hard and took about 2 hours,the small oil filter was a bit of a bugger to change,and waiting for the motor to warm up enough to get the correct level took 20mins.Didnt realise how much oil came out of the pipe that you remove to get to the filter,i didnt have the drain bowl ready[8|]so you can imagine the mess.
All in all it was easy to do and ive saved myself some dosh.....spark plugs after work later in week.
 
2 spanners now,did spark plugs,easier than i thought,just the one behind the pas pump was a bit of a bugger,took me over half an hour,but found a way,well happy with myself.
 
No did it with what i had.....3/8drive-spark plug socket and 2 x3inch extensions(1 of which had the movable joint)which i think helped.
On the right lower rear i used a 12inch extension on top of the others,that also requires removal of the big rubber tube in front of it(easy).
But the right upper front is a nightmare,i put the plug socket and 1 extension down the hole then just before i lost it i added the other extension,then i bent part of the engine bay covers down out of the way(between chassis and suspension frame)and added the 12inch extension to undo)but unless you are confident of not losing the socket or maybe you have fat hands,i wouldnt recommend you even try,i certainly wont bother for a long time as the old ones didnt look that bad.
If you live nearish Cheshunt/herts i wouldnt mind giving you a hand.
Bear in mind mine hasnt got aircon and i think they are harder to do.
 
On the subject of spark plugs - I reckon my '97 42k mile 993 Targa will be due it's 48k service in April. Would anyone care to recommend one make or type of spark plug over another ? What was OE on these cars? Should I stick with OE or go with something else?

I could also do with some new wiper blades - again do I need to purchase a particular brand or model? I know the rubber bung that usually fits between the wipes doesn't fit my current blades as they have square not rectangular holes. My local OPC quoted me £30 for a new pair [&:] but surely I can get a pucker pair cheaper elsewhere.

Any advice appreciated.
 
I recently changed the spark plugs in my 993C2, originals were OE Beru items, I fitted Bosch FR5DTC but on close inspection the Beru plugs had the same part number stamped on them.

When changing the plugs, it is easier if you remove the 2 tin engine shields partially obscure the cam covers.

The oe spark plugs are apparently as good as you get,i would also recommend getting genuine wiper blades as the blade holders are more flexable and bend round the screen better (even tho the oe ones seem to be bosch)the bosch ones i got from halfords were rubbish.
