DIY Oil & Filter change

I just cant help wanting to tinker with the car in a small way and was wondering how easy it might be to do an oil and filter job myself ? Not a fan of 20000 mile oil change intervals and having bedded the engine in nicely now, thinking a fresh drop might be nice.

Anyone had a go ?
 
I agree with service interval being too high a milage. Surely even OPC's can't be that over the top just to change oil and filter, worth checking before getting grubby fingernails!
 
Guys, I got mine changed by my OPC at 4-5k as I didn't want to leave the change too long.

I went to my local halfords to pick up 10l of Mobil 1 as it was on special - car uses something like 9.7l I think.

OPC then charged me for half an hour labour and about £8 for a new oil filter.

Very straight forward.
 
Had a quote from an OPC for an unscheduled oil and filter change:

£246.55 - including VAT!!!

The car hold 8.5 litres, including the filter; Opie Oils can supply that amount for around £80. I don't know how much an OEM oil filter costs - but it and the labour seem to amount to around £165!

Interestingly, the minor service - at 2 years old or 20,000 miles - costs 'only' £342. Having checked the service schedule in detail, it would appear that checking, replacing or adjusting the many items (other than the oil and filter change) 'only' costs around £95 - if the oil and filter change costs about £246.

Somebody, somewhere is making a BIG profit!

They want about £70 from me to do it if I supply the oil, still going to be £150-£160 at that.

I'd do it yourself.

You need a filter wrench to get the filter cap off (the filter is in fact a replaceable paper cartridge). Halfords may be able to sell you one or you can order one online from snapon (you need their FW7614, which I think stands for 76mm, 14 flats). You're meant to torque it corrrectly (I think it has 25nm written on it. Mine had a yellow dot on the top of it and when I retightened it the dot ended up in the same place).

The drain plug(s) will need a washer. On my GT3 the crankcase has a washer as does the oil tank - one's aluminium, the other's copper. Your OPC will tell you what you need (I think they call them slipper rings). The torque for the drain plug will probably be 70nm for the crankcase and 60nm for the oil tank (atleast they're the figures for a GT3 so ask your OPC what's correct for a 997).

well just to update, after two weeks to think about it the OPC still couldn't give me a price for an oil change while they had it on the ramps for warranty work.

So i bought the filter and aluminium plug washer from the parts depot (about £16 all in), ordered oil from Opie (delivered next day)

20 minutes of my own labour, and 40 minutes allowing the sump to drain and i was done. The filter canister torque is 25Nm (its printed on it [;)] )

So all told £80.

Having changed the oil at 10k miles, i have to say the old oil looked remarkably fine. Perhaps in hindsight a waste of time/money. On the other hand the oil might have bene lik treacle and in for another 10k - peace of mind if nothing else i guess.

A few years ago none of us would have even thought twice about doing an oil and filter change on the motor, its not rocket science so whats changed ?

What brand and spec of oil did you go for ?

Well a very good and knowledgeable indy told me that some of the RMS issues are not helped by the very thin nature of Mobil 1 (0W40).

I consulted the Porsche approved oils list and found that the Fuchs Titan Supersyn oil is 5W-40 - not much of a change granted, but higher viscosities like 15W50 do not feature on the list. Used Titan Supersyn on previous cars and found it excellent oil, never discolouring like some of the Castrol lubes did, and a bit cheaper than Mobil 1 too - £27 for 4 litres delivered from Opie
