DIY servicing

I am looking to get another 911 & have been considering a 964 C2 . Are they straight forward to service at home or do they need any specialist equipment?

Service kits are about £50 - £60 for the 964. I'm told that you have to take off part of the exhaust system to change plugs.
I didn't really look into servicng at home as the garage I use only charged £150 for a 12 month service, (including fan belt and plug change).
Most, if not all, of the diagnostics are picked up using a Bosch Hammer bit of kit.

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

The 964 C2 is a little bit more complicated than earlier models but is still very well suited to DIY service. The C4's PDAS system though requires the use of the Bosch hammer (system tester 9288) in order to test the PDAS system fully.
The correct 12k mile service requires check and adjustment of valve clearance which will require that you remove the engine undertray and catalytic convertor and final exhaust box. This is easy nut and bolt work but time consuming, which is why 964's are more expensive to service than the earlier cars. Service kits with genuine parts are readily availiable and come with all the gaskets and nut's n bolts you may need. The best book to help you understand how to go about maintenance of your 964 is undoubtably the 964 enthusiasts companion by Adrain Streather it explains servicing and a whole lot more. You would also be wise to obtain the original Porsche Workshop Manual.
Bear in mind an oil change takes apprx 9 liters of oil and you will want to by good quality Porsche approved oil and a service kit with the correct parts, add these up and your bill for parts alone will be well in excess of £100 to do the job properly. In terms of special tools it's worth investing in a feeler gauge tool such as the one sold by type 911 and others, as this makes the job an awfull lot easier. I can't think off hand of any other tools that could be deemed specialist when it comes to regular servicing. Hope this helps.
