DME Chip Upgrade

Type 911 in Kent are currently selling DME replacement chips for £80 + VAT . These are a copy of the Ruf chip. Has anyone heard anything about the Type 911 chip ? If not I guess i'll be the guinea pig !! Are these types of things easy to fit ?

Graham -don't touch anything unless you can get a before and after rolling road check done to actually ensure that the chip is going to be an improvement and that your car is putting out the power that is originally intended.

A re-chip can sometimes upset all sorts of things, so you need to be sure it will do as promised.

At eighty quid it sounds far too cheap!!

.... i was concerned myself that it was too cheap to be any good. It's crazy isn't that unless you need to re-mortgage your house to buy a part for your Porsche you presume it'll be no good !!

I had my car on the rolling road before xmas and it was pumping out 258bhp - which pleased me alot !

Thanks for your help Melv

That's good!! At least now you know you've got something to build on. But beware wild claims of more bhp unless they can be substantiated.

Bare in mind that £6000 was spent on my car in '96 to get another 40 brake!! Not by me, I hasten to add!!

Um er yes, well I don't think i'll be going to crazy just yet but I take your point on the cost / result ratio and will enquire with regards to the testing on a rolling road post fitment.

£80 does sound cheap but bear in mind that's unfitted and with out the use of a rolling road. I used to have my car remapped on average twice a year as I played around with different exhausts, cats etc. I've stopped now but I think I only paid Geoff Everett around £250 including bespoke chip and rolling road - so it may not be that far out! (prices do seem to vary from car to car).

That said, in my opinion, Geoff is the the best motronics guy around and I would only ever trust my car to him. Since he has departed AMD he is doing a fair bit of development work but can still does standard ECU remaps - he's doing one this week of one of the Sussex members. As a guide mine's +34bhp on a std 272bhp 993 with loads more torque, altough that did need exhaust, cats etc. to change as well.

Hi Peter,

Do you happen to have a contact number for Geoff ? When I bought the car the exhaust had been modifed but i'm not sure what it is and I have just fitted a K&N panel filter - I presume it was these two items that contributed the additional 8bhp over the standard figure.

The improved torque and throttle response is what interests me the most.

These are a copy of the Ruf chip

And I'm sure Alois Ruf is fully supportive of this?...[8|]
Even without the legal worries of a "copy", Ruf does a lot more than just re-map a chip. Without the matching exhaust, air intake etc you may end up with poorer rather than better performance.

Just my opinion[;)]

thanks Melv.

I just spoke to Geoff ( very helpful guy ). He suggested I check my exhaust configuration and then I can organise a day where he'll remap the ECU for £350 all in with a rolling road check... can't wait !

You may wish to look on the 3.2 Carrera board, as there is a great thread running about chips etc. As an FYI, the chip for our cars can be yours for £2.50 from any Maplins. Furthemore When comparing the code changed on a re-map to the original then a massive % of the code, fuel and ignition map is.....standard. I.E - as per Bosch settings.

Just a thought....

Just to reiterate what Steve has just said...

80 quid for an exact copy of a RUF chip (if thats what it is) is not good value! Outragous ripoff is closer!

27C64 from Maplin £3.50, time to copy original and burn new chip 2 minutes.
2732's are a bit harder to find but I can get them for the same cost.

If it is a RUF based chip and they have modified it then I guess it depends on how much time/experience they put into it and how well it performs for you as whether its good value.

I will happily burn an eprom with any image you like for the cost of the chip itself. You provide me with the original chip or a image file of the contents and I'll make a copy of it. (I won't do anything with a copyright message in it)

I think the value in these 'chip only solutions' comes down to how much time and effort was put into creating them AND how much support is provided after you have bought them. As far as I know there is only one person who will work with you to make changes if your not happy and give you your money back if your not satisfied.

The above excludes the custom map chips which are performed using a rolling road. Obviously these take time and experience and equipment and are therefore much more expensive. I agree with the recommendations for Geoff.

Cheers

Andy
