DME Performance upgrade

Has anyone had any experience with upgrading their engine management chip to increase the performance further. I have been looking at 911Chips.com and reading up on their offerings. They state that they reduce the lower end lag, etc. I would be interested to hear from anyone that has actually tried them out.

Any feedback welcomed.

Cheers Steve,

Can't get a log on at the moment on the impactbumpers forum. Will keep trying. What sort of performance do you get and is it hard wearing on the engine? Do you need to service it more regular, etc?

Thanks for the info.

Shirish is spot on,
HP gains depend on the condition of your engine to start with, a lot of the 3.2's are dynoing at 220 to 225HP
rather than the 231HP quoted spec.
The other advantage of the SW chips is that they will improve the driveablity of the car throughout the rev range, its not all about out and out HP.
Combine a chip with something like an M&K or Hayward and Scott back box, straight through pre-silencer and you have yourself a flyer.
One example is a 3.2 that started off at about 223HP, adding a SW chip, H&S backbox, pre-silencer and a cone filter took it up to 256HP.

Hi Steve, Shirish,

Cheers for the feedback. Going to check out what size chip I have before I enquire, and whilst i'm there check my mixture setting now I have changed the back box and air filter arrangement, in case its running lean now with it being a little free flowing (don't have an oxygen sensor).

Mods so far are very similar to what you mention Steve, K&N filter (still original filter box), a H&S back box and pre-silencer, running Shell Optimax (99RON). It now sounds excellent and seems a little smoother in the lower rev range.

Sounds like the next step is a SW chip in a few months.

James,

As you have done some mods already it might be worthwhile getting it dynoed first and sending the graphs to Steve Wong as Shirish suggested, you can either get an off the shelf chip or a custom one done to suit your graphs.
The custom route hasn't worked in my case, my car was 245hp to start with, with a CS chip (higher rev limit)
I first purchased an off the shelf one, but didn't dyno it. I then later decided on a custom one, this reduced HP to 239, a second cut then reduced it to 237, this could'nt be explained by SW, so I have refitted the off the shelf one which seems to work well but still haven't dynoed it. This isn't the norm, usually the results are very good.
You might experience more popping from the exhaust with the SW chip, if you don't already.
What area are you in. Have you got onto www.impactbumpers.com yet.

Hi Steve, Last time it wouldn't let me join impactbumpers forum. I'll give it another go. Cheers for the advice about getting it on the dyno. Do you know a good one in the R17 area? Cheers

James

James... try Wayne Schofield (Chip wizrads) he is in the North but worth a trip to see him - he did my car and I am very pleased - nice guy too.

I personally see the Steve Wong chip as a bit of a false economy. By the time you've had two or three dyno runs to sort the finer points of set-up and factored in the cost of the chip in the first place, you're at as much money as it costs to have Wayne do a proper live re-map. He really does get results and you end up with the optimum from the outset.

Hope it helps!

Oliver - spot on - why have the one size fits all approach to a bespoke needed service[;)]
I had a re-map and set up for me that I am very satisfied with - I have no affiliation but really recomend Wayne!

Go for bespoke with wayne schofield, a certain Mr Totsnap knows this works well with a modified intake and exhaust.
If you think about it not all K&Ns are the same and not all exhausts are the same.
If you really want some extra top end zing get a mass flow sensor ( hot wire or film) fitted and when wayne is finished you will be in 993 performance territory -- ask me how i know[;)].
Mike

Thanks Everyone for the advice.

I'll look up this Wayne Schofield when the time comes, it sounds a better option where you can go and meet someone and talk about your requirement. Could you tell me more about this max flow sensor, where do you fit this and how much are they?

James

The mass flow air sensor is fitted just after the air intake filter and replaces the older mechanical flap system.
I'm not that technical but the hot wire or hot film systems allow the ecu to optimise the air /fuel ratios quicker because the change in temp across the hot wire/film is an instant electrical signal and not the result of a mechanical and by definition slower signal. It's all in the Bruce Anderson book which is a must but for any modder.
Don't know who does the mass flow packages but I reckon most of the big name independents could source a unit. You could do worse than check out USA sites eg Rennlist with 2+ USD/GBP stuff can be cheap. My car got 254 BHP in a roasting hot dyno environment after WS had worked on the car, top end was awesome .
Mike

Mike - Wayne managed to get 261 out of my car...... and its a whole new experience!!!!!![:D][:D][:D][:D]

I have a stock Steve Wong chip BRAND NEW never installed if you want it and £100 its yours including postage and packing. Its still in the jiffy bag from the US and boxed with instructions.
I have one in my SSE and its transformed the driveability IMO
Cheers
Simon
