DME Relay Failure - 993 part

Afternoon all

I had a no start last night, good tacho bounce, turning over nice and healthy but not a sausage in terms of firing up. Cranked for about 30 seconds on and off, nothing doing. Reached for the spare DME relay (also 993 part, not new but known working) which has lived in the glovebox for 10 years. Popped it in and then it fired up after about 7 or 8 seconds and drove fine. Went out today and started on the button like normal and went for a decent run, all good. So I assume the relay was at fault. It seems to be about 12 years old according to my history file and is a 993 part.

I assume this is the revised part that superseded the 944 part, but still susceptible to failure I suppose. I haven't tried swapping them back to see if it works but from knowledge they fail intermittently so I don't see the point. Will bin it and purchase a fresh spare as I've no idea of the history of the spare I used.

To be fair it has lasted around 70k miles and many many starts and journeys so can't grumble. Any suggestions or do's and don'ts before I buy a new one?

Thanks in advance

Stuart

Thanks. My removed one is 993.615.227.00 and seems to have been made in Hungary! The VW Heritage one is out of stock and the other one is a US supplier, and also ends 00.

I'll have a look about.

Ok, so a bit of digging around reveals that you can get a URO one with mixed reviews (£33 delivered, amazon), or OEM @ £72, or the "made in Hungary" type that lasted me 12 years. Frazerpart sells the latter for £21.74 plus £6 delivery. If Max stocks them then that's good enough for me. I found a seller on ebay, ignitionmagition, who sells same unit for £22.99 inc. free delivery and has sold loads of them so just ordered one of them for the glovebox.

It seems that the "made in Hungary" one is OEM. The ebay guy says it's OEM as does Max at Frazerpart. The ebay guy also sells the URO one for £21.99 delivered but is not claiming that to be OEM.

Good to hear Ian. :)

Anyone tried the solid state one? I replaced mine with the a Porsche genuine one form ignition magician in Nov 17, as the solid state were out of stock at the time. The solid state one is from an American firm, seem to get good write ups in the the states, available in the UK at £85 so not much more than a genuine one now and allegedly bullet proof and with quicker / more reliable starting as fuel pump get voltage for 3 sec before engine turned over.

Interested if anyone tried on here?

The solid state ones are very good, I had problems with standard OEM ones for years in my car, since fitting the solid version zero problems in 4 years. Unfortunately you have found an old link that is not used as we cant get them anymore!

Genuine Porsche ones are made in Germany (as are our OEM versions)

Part arrived, will stick it in glovebox until other one chucks it. Has an OEM sticker on it and is made in Germany and is current part number. Would recommend Ignitionmagician for anybody else needing a DME relay or anybody who travels without a spare!
