DME relay getting quite warm - normal?

Having only recently purchased my 944 S2 I'm still getting to know it.

All had been going well until last week when it cut out on me while waiting at a set of lights and failed to restart until it had cooled down. This scenario repeated itself a couple more times and hence I booked it into the garage for an auto electrician to investigate.

He diagnosed a partially blocked fuel filter that was causing the DME/fuel pump relay to overload/overheat, eventually malfunctioning causing the car to cut out. On this basis the car has had a new fuel filter and a DME relay fitted and so far it's running fine. I have noticed however that the new DME relay is still getting quite hot during use which makes me worry that there is still something amiss? Could anyone advise further / check to see if your replay gets hot?

Thanks in advance [;)]

I've never checked it, but given that the DME relay is an assembly of coils and switches then I'd fully expect it to get hot in use.

I'd not worry about it if I were you.

Oli.

"Warm" is to be expected. "Too hot to touch" would be a cause for concern and could indicate a fault. Make your own call.

However, since you SHOULD be carrying a spare, where's the harm in popping another one in for comparison? :) You can always put the original back if the two react the same.

Thanks folks, think I'm just a bit paranoid as the car is new to me [:D]

I have got a spare DME relay onboard, so I'll pop that one in and see how warm it gets. It's not getting crazy hot, so fingers crossed all is well - it's certainly running nicely since the new fuel filter and DME relay were fitted!

I'm going to give it a run down to Devon at the weekend so hopefully it will behave itself!
