DME relay, the achilles heel of my 924S

Greetings ladies and gentlemen
Soon after ownership of my 924S, the DME relay went after a few months last October( grateful thanks to all the members who suggested I replace it. Started first time as soon as it was replaced)).
The best piece of advice from the forum members however,was to keep a spare in the glove box
So glad I did, as the car stalled after filling up last week..
However, the important thing is, this time it seems to have lasted just nine months.
Is this usual ? or is anything else misbehaving which seems to blow it so soon (no rust, no leakage from the old one and it is also deuced awkward removing it!)
Would appreciate any thoughts on this issue.

Was it an original Porsche item? You can also use a piece of wire with three spade connectors as an emergency DME relay - just link pins 87, 87b and 30 but remember to remove the link when you switch off the engine otherwise the battery will drain.

Relays are often repairable too.
 
Over many years and 3 924's I have got to know and love [8D] the DME relay.
Most of them last for years but ocaisionally you come across one that lasts a month or 2. I uasually use the correct VW/Audi/Porsche unit so that isn't the problem.
They cost less than half a tank of petrol (less than a quarter tank in the Turbo) so just keep one in the Glove Box.
 
We have had our 924S since 1991;have never had any starting problems,never changed any relays,gets used for a week,gets left for a week in the garage,used it last night to go up to the joint R18/Kirkby Lonsdale Concords meeting,doesn't miss a beat up the M6 & back at 90/95/100(Speedo) at 32+mpg on 95 ron.I think some people worry too much.[:)]
 
Things happen to make people worry.
OK so you've had 16 years without needing a new DME relay and another member got only a few months with his. I'm sure telling him not to worry because you haven't had a problem isn't any comfort to him.

The lesson is carry a spare and when (if) you need to use it get another.

I may have had a friday evening relay.
However, as before, I will take the advice to keep a spare in the glove box. Certainly got me out of a jam

I'm pretty sure that all Porsche Parts have a two year guarantee so it may be worth taking it back to the OPC for an exchange
 



Geoff,I did put a "smiley" at the end;I just think it is all too easy to give the impression of unreliability which I have never experienced;that was the gist of my text.However ,I do carry a spare DME relay in the 964 but , again, have never experienced all the "funny" starting,running idiosynchronsies raised on the forum.I get the silly potentially expensive things that don't affect the engine like petrol tank sender units.

If you don't want to appear rude you don't need to use a "smiley". A full stop would be better, used earlier.
 
One problem with using the forum is being picked up by someone for just expressing an opinion or giving an alternative experience.I also don't need to advised where & how to punctuate my comments.Answers on a postcard please.(note;no smiley!)

I contacted Porsche who replaced the DME relay without charge as it was only 10 months old.
