Do I have to use Mobil1 oil?

My local garage has an offer on at the moment for Fuchs oil, ive always used mobil1 on my 987 and its done nearly 90k miles now.
Its out of warranty etc now.

Im wondering if i will be ok with this equivilent spec 0-40w fully synthetic oil.

A complete oil and filter change with the Fuchs is £45, with the Mobil1 its nearer £100!

Whilst Porsche would advise the use of Mobil 1 they do authorise other oils as alternatives. The following Fuchs oils maybe used:

FUCHS TITAN Supersyn 5W-40
FUCHS TITAN GT1 5W-40
FUCHS TITAN Supersyn LONGLIFE 5W-40

However, there are no 0W-40 Fuchs Oils currently recommended by Porsche for the 987.

Note: 5W is should only be used for temps above -25C whereas 0W can be used for all.

Hi All,

My local independant dealer used Valvoline 0-40 in my 2002 Boxster S, they have been using it for years and seem to sneer at Mobil 1 (I think because of inflated price). Any idea if Valvoline is Porsche approved please?

Thank you.

The only Valvoline oil authorised for Europe is:

Valvoline SynPower SAE 5W-40

Note again it is 5W-40 there is no 0W-40 authorised.

There are two other Valvoline oils for China and USA (Both 5W):

Valvoline SynPower MST SAE 5W-40
Valvoline SynPower HST SAE 5W-40

I put some in a 986 Boxster recently and I thought it was too thin. The engine began to sound very noisey from cold.

I then used the Opie Oils recommended premium Mobil Oil - 3000 which was a 5W-30 ... from memory. Car sounded much happier.

I don't think there's much difference in viscosity at cold, but it made a real difference to noise and smoke. I won't try M1 again in an M96 engine!

All this said if you want 8/9 litres of Mobil 1 for a good price ... contact me [:D] (I couldn't bring myself to dispose of it).
