Do they hit???

944rob

Hi, i've just purchased my 1st 944, its an 1989 2.7, now i bourght this cheap due to it haveing a broken cam belt!! it broke at idle...........now my question is when the belt brokes do they hit the valves??!!

Yes: its an interference angine Im afraid. The 2.7l is different from the earlier and superficially similar 2.5l engines too, having much in common with the later 3.0l types. Hopefully a few new valves will see it right again...

Ouch. And those valves won't be cheap either ... people talk about the need to replace belts for a reason.

Simon, I'm interested in your comment about the 2.7 having more in common with the 3.0 than the 2.5 engine. In what way? Surely the 2.7 having an 8v head makes it far more similar to the 2.5?

My thoughts too. I thought the 2.7 and 2.5 were virtually identical other than stroke and bore, both having 8v heads. The 944S has the 16v head like the 3.0 S2, but the capacity of the S was 2.5 not 2.7.

What is undeniable is the fact that it is an interference engine [:(]

The 2.7 has the same bore size and the block is the same as the s2 and 968 it also uses the s2/968 waterpump, but it uses the 2.5 oil cooler, crank, conrods and cam housing.
The cylinder head will fit the s2/968 block and not the 2.5.
Valves for the 2.7 are over £100 each last time I looked, which is 'kin spendy.
(not 100% on crank and conrods)

As i thought.........expense, not to worry tho im a mechanic so the labours free!! valves are £70 if 1 and £130 for the other i cant remember witch1 was inlet and witch 1 was exhaust, well i'd better get the head off this weekend then and see how many i need!!
