Do you really know your cars history?

As most regulars know, my Turbo has been down in Bournemouth for a good many months having its engine rebuilt. The car is a 1989 250bhp Turbo with matching engine and chassis numbers correct for the year and all the usual gizmos for an '89 car (M030, brake ducts etc).

However I have just learnt from Jon Mitchell that all is not what it seems. On close inspection of my turbocharger it turns out that it is in fact a K26/6 from an earlier 220bhp car and not a K26/8 as it should be. Closer inspection of my old head also revealed that it too is from an earlier 220bhp car (there is some difference re oil ways apparently). Looking at the condition of the parts Jon believes that they have been on the car for a very long time and can only guess that maybe the original turbo failed and damaged the head very early in the cars life. At that time there were not many S/H spares around for a 250bhp car so maybe thats why the earlier parts were used.

I am the 4th owner and bought the car from a friend in the club four years ago, and he had owned it for the previous two years. It came with a very full (and I mean full) and complete folder of OPC and Specialist history going back to the day it was first sold. However it just goes to show that with old cars there really could be so many little skeletons hiding in the cupboard.

It does make me feel a little happier about my weedy 282bhp at last years Dyno Day - it only had an ickle turbo [:D]

And mine was fitted with a widefire Head gasket sometime (estimated at least 10 years ago) which I didn't know about ;)

Mine was fitted with it's Teardrops by an OPC. Imagine my surprise when I had window and mirror problems, looked behind the door card to find every wire cut, joined with tin foil and only occasionally insulated [][][]

No surprise that there was the odd short caused....

Maybe I shouldn't have been surprised [&:]

That makes me feel happier as I am targetting around 260 - 270 bhp from my ickle turbo but 282bhp sounds so much better!! What boost pressure were you running??

Are you sure you're going to be able to handle your 3.2ltr monster when it does get back on the road?

What boost pressure were you running??

That was at 15psi, but it dropped down to 12psi

No [] it's been 9 months since I drove 282bhp, goodness knows what 4xxbhp will feel like?

My car apparently went to the states from new. I had its numbers checked on local OPC database and it has the correct chassis no for a rhd US export.

Surprisingly enough it went as RHD and ended up in a Nevada dealer spec`d by a British army/navy/RAF services person which included `silver rose` spec incl sunroof delete option and cruise control but not the upholstery.

Its chassis/body is not stamped as a 951 yet clearly is one, it's also an 87 body but with the battery in the rear and registered in sept 88.

Interestingly I cannot find any evidence of cruise control ever having been fitted but unfortunately the label on the rear was peeled off by the last owner as it was untidy [], the residue is still there but as the log book is non original I do not have the full spec apart from what Porsche tell me.

It was serviced by a porsche dealer up until about 18000 miles and then came home. The service book was lost for the first couple of services but then replaced and service/marked up by the dealer and the replacement service book noted as such.

Ho hum, its a mystery.............

You should have a copy sticker in the service book if you have the original now, but i think you're saying it was lost and then replaced?[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]All oval dash RHD cars had the battery in the rear.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]Strange it didn't get the hideous big bumper on the rear and running lights on the corners if it was a US delivery.[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

Obviously the original buyer had taste [:D]. At least the paintwork isn't too pink.

Strange it didn't get the hideous big bumper on the rear and running lights on the corners if it was a US delivery.

True but it has since had a complete respray but no record of it or bills etc apart from the paint mix schedule (Leinen Metallic)

It could have been changed back I suppose but the v nice chap at the Porsche OPC said it was a RHD european spec for export to US according to the chassis no
