I have come across this wheel and believe it to be from an early 944
Info on the wheel Fond Metal 1987 ET11 P.C.D 120 F 8J X 16
Using 245 /45 Z16 Avon Turbo Speed
Centre cap is missing
Can anyone confirm if this type of wheel was used on the 944 Thank you

Hi J

It looks to me like an early 924 wheel I seem to recall seeing similar when I first started to look for a Porsche and checked out a few 924 for sale Geoff Ives is the expert on that model perhaps he could tell you more

It looks like a BBS magnesium wheel to me...?

Could have been used on a 944 as an aftermarket wheel. I'm sure some of the more knowledgeable 944 guys will be along soon.

Edited to add: Probably not magnesium centre as I can't see the bolts attaching it to the rim. Looks like a BBS though.

Unless you mistyped the PCD it wouldn't even bolt on to a 944. ET11 is not a 944 offset either so my guess is that it isn't a 944 wheel, though if the PCD matches Porsche 5 stud then it might fit early offset cars. On a later car you'd be lucky to have the inside edge of the tyre in the arch never mind the outside.

Edited to say that's a joke, but it would stick out of the arch some way on an '87 -on car.

I doubt it's a 924 wheel as it's 16" and 8" seems a bit wide, unless it was an option on the Turbo and it's had a wider still tyre mounted. That is academic if the PCD really is 5 x 120 though as it won't mount.

it's not a 924 wheel, they're 4 stud (4 x 108) except the S's (and turbo's?) which use early 944 hubs, so if the PCD is wrong for a 944, it wont even fit those..

if its a 944 PCD it may could have been used on a 924S which has a narrower track than the 944's it shares running gear with. But I've never really got my head round offset/backspacing etc .. so i may be wrong there.

fondmetal is an italian alloy wheel manufacturer, used to supply some of the F1 teams in the 80's and even ran their own team at the back of the grid for a couple of years.

ET11 is low compared with the early 944 which ran ET in the mid 20's and the later cars which ran ET in the 50's. What that means is that the mating face of the wheel to hub is 11mm outboard of the centre line. Clearly with the later cars where it is 50+ mm outboard the effect is that the ET11 rim would sit 40-odd mm further out from the hub.

Backspace is another expression of offset but I'm unsure what it relates the mating face of wheel and hub to to produce a figure.

An 8" ET11 is a rear: it was probably bought for a 911 though, as they were damned expensive in the 1980s. I had a set of black centres FondMetals like this on my hilclimber in the early nineties, they were 7.5" & 9" x 16" and they were completely obsolete and unobtainable in 1994. When I found myself in need of a replacerent front I ended up buying the last remaining wheel from the original importers.

Assuming that the PCD is 5x130mm of course! With regards to the offset: 944 Fuchs option wheels had an offset of 11mm...

I hadn't considered what a Fuchs might have as offset. Regardless it isn't going to fit a 250 Turbo even if it is the right PCD.

The rim definitely looks Fuch'd [:D] I do recognise it but can't quite place it. 5 x 130 will help as the others have stated.

There was a red 944 for sale recently with these wheels, an '83 IIRC, so early offset. It looked pretty good (yes, I know it was red...)

Mine looked quite smart with them in black/alloy on a white car. That was then though, Im not aure about now: theyre very old.

I think they look quite good as well (but maybe I live in the 80s in some ways in that respect), and I can remember seeing several 944s with similar wheels so if the questions is "were wheels of this type fitted to the 944" then, as Simon can confirm through personal experience, the answer is yes.

I was answering the question "was this actual wheel originally fitted to a 944" and I think the answer is still possibly, pending clarification on the PCD. I'm also pre-empting there is an element of "would it fit my car" which, as it's a 250 Turbo, it will not.

I had a set fitted to my early 944 about 12 years ago which came off a german registered 924 turbo(cgt bodied),they were the same make/size although im not sure of the offset, only difference was mine didnt have the big cap over the bolt holes, instead they just had a 50mm (i think)normal centre cap
