Hoping to get to see this at the weekend:
http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C63070

Just wondering if anyone on here knows the car and can give me any specific hints / tips before I go?

Also if anyone has a heads up on other S2s for sale in the northwest with good history please let me know!

Thanks.

Hi,

Don't know the car, but it say Hartec history which is good.

Usual caveats. Cills and wing bottoms for rust, recent service history - nice if it's had things like a clutch but the essentials are belts and cam chain, and the condition of the cams themselves.

Pictures don't show much, but it could use a shiny new coolant tank to match the washer reservoir! [:)]

Thanks for the reply - I think I have read just about every 944 s2 buyers guide in the past 6 months, even repositioning my garage door to fit one in!

Had a budget of £4k which this stretches slightly, hoping for a regularly used 100-150k miler with good history, no rust and inspected or replaced cams / cam chain. I'm thinking the clutch will prob have needed to be done at those miles too. Recent belts and tensioners are a bonus, can budget for replacement though. Oh it has to be grey or blue too (me, fussy?).

It certainly looks a nice car. But as we all know pictures can be decieving...
If its been a "Hartech" car, why not give them a call. They might just tell you a few things about it....I certainly would, if i was thinking about buying the car..

Been to see this car along with a couple of others. On 142k and is very nice, history checks out. Had some paintwork in the past so imperfect, but ahs had enthusiast owners so everything is in order. Needs a belt + oil service (~£350 at MB). Interior switchgear well worn but everything works.

Also saw the red 1990 S2 in Lytham on autotrader, that car is cosmetically rough (rusty bits and panel gaps) and bits like the heater controls and speedo(!) dont work properly. Has been stood with little use (2 track days) in a year. Looking through the V5 I spotted it had a VIC check and it turns out it is a Cat C when the dealer HPI'd it, he claimed he didnt know about that. The price quickly dropped to £2700 which may make it a bit of a bargain for someone for a track car? But not an everyday keeper as there were too many bits and bobs needing doing. It ran superbly though. Interestingly this one at around 140k did have any worn interior switchgear and even the clock was fully functional.

So the grey car it is for me - I just feel it maybe slightly over priced. After speaking to Specialist Cars, Hartech, Loe Bank and MB Engineering they all said a good 944 s2 with around 150k serviced and ready to go is worth £3500-4000 in a private sale.

Does leather interior add to the value? I would actually prefer cloth (I'm strange like that).

Watching the silver one on ebay with interest to see what price it achieves.

The grey one is overpriced IMO, in the current climate, especially as it's due a belt service.

Me too. I'm somewhat surprised that all of those specialists (actually I only know two of them and one of those I wouldn't touch) are so far out of touch with their market when I'm 12,000 miles away and I know an S2 isn't worth £4k these days unless it's exceptional.

So which specialists are respected? I'd do a belt service myself but if a car has good history it would be worth keeping that up.

And whats a reasonable price? - there seems very few advertised under 4k, the one I saw was ropey and easily needed a couple of grands work (clutch, sills, service).

Yes it does seem a tad top side £££ wise. especially at 150K miles...
Specialist indies..
Ive used Hartech in the past, good service , they know the 944/968 breed well.
MB engineering. I have recently used them, + would highly recomend them / him...[:D][:D]
Never dealt with Loe Bank....
OR Specialist Cars, [Malton i presume] .. Although they ALWAYS sell there cars at the TOP end of the price / market...Sometimes [i think.] taking the p~~s price wise.....
As im sure you well know. Its a buyers market + dont let the dealers tell you otherwise...
Theres always another car that will come along, poss with lower milage + just as good a service record.. So dont jump into the first one that seems good...
Even if the market is a tad stagnant at present....

I don't know anything about MB or Loe Bank. Hartech very well respected, so that leaves the one that sells overpriced average condition cars that are badly described (not official colour names etc.)...

I haven't used all of these, but based on the reviews of people I trust and niot having heard anything bad in a looooong time of being around the community I'd say:

Motortune are good for Sw Scotland
Hartech good for the NW
RPM good for the middle/south bit (and there's one deliberate omission here [;)])
Jon Mitchell is good for the south coast
Steve Bull is good for the south west-ish
Andy Moss is good for the real south west

I have missed some inadvertently I appreciate, but as above one I missed deliberately.

I bet the ones not advertised under 4k aren't selling. I'd have thought low threes tops unless exceptional from what I understand of the current market in the UK.

eBay one looks nice. Hideous chavvy rear lights would have to go, obviously, but the rest looks tidy.

That eBay one looks very like one that I considered, 4 years ago. Same colour and same rear lights, and stacks of history. In Manchester as well. I think it had 140k ish miles back then. I didn't go to see it as it clearly had rust bubbling up on the sills.

Having said that I think the one I am talking about may have had a linen interior ... can't remember for sure.

Either way, if you do have a look then ask some questions about how long he has owned it and whether the sills have ever been done.

Whats wrong with the rear lights..???
I think [on the right car], they look rather good....
But then i would seeing as i have some for sale....[;)][;)]

Defo as i said b4 MB engineering all the way....[:D][:D][:D][:D] VERY thorough...

Whoops [:)]

The rear lights are not to my taste as they look like something you'd find on a scratter's ratty Corsa. (In my opinion). I like the clears (which are rare as hen's teeth) but I'm afraid dark tinted don't work for me.
