I'm going to look at this S2 at the weekend, just wondering if anyone knows the car or has seen it?

I used to be non-committal about white 944's but once cleaned up and shiney they are gorgeous [8D]

Should be easy to spot any brown stains on the sills as well [;)]

looks very nice valeted in a dealer showroom with the spotlights etc. I don't see anything about the belts, clutch and water-pump being replaced recently which would concern me at that mileage .

I reckon its priced too high by about £1.5k given that it is 17 years old, either that or I got mine at a bargain price.Ask what trade in value he would give if you changed your mind in 3 months time

Cloth interior....not necessarily bad, but worth mentioning.

White is less easy to re-sell, but if you're not planning to sell it who cares?

As Peanut said, at that price expect none of the big bills to be looming. Cills and wings corrosion free, belts, water pump, chain and probably cams done etc.

Being a cynical old git, the guy can't spell. He's in the trade, but steal exhaust and rear spliter could either mean old-school dealer with no idea how a spellcheck works ( like the guy I bought from ) or a complete idiot who also knows nothing about the car he's describing.....

Don't know where you are based, but I'm sure that one of the very helpful guys on here would accompany you for the "any inspection welcome"!

[:D][:D][:D][:D]made I larf....

spelling is unbelievable these days, like Breaks for example (they apparently stop the car)[:D]

good idea Paul to take along another 44 owner .Even I get carried away by the shiny paintwork some times lol. [:(]

I went to this dealer with my father about 4 months ago when he was looking for a BMW 645ci and the condition of the car was embarrasing - all looked good on the web but in the flesh it was very tired. Yes, they had some beatifully prepared Lambo's that were near 6 figures but anything under 30k was very poorly prepared. I had a very close look at a 996 C2 cab that they had in the same showroom and it was an absolute mess - a total disgrace for a dealer to be selling.
The showroom was very nice, and the owner (yes, 'Amari'!) was a nice enough chap, but the cars not very nice.
Did I mention his cars weren't very nice.....! - I suggest you have a thorough inspection of the car if it looks ok as it could be hiding some nasty surprises.

(Only my opinion! )

Mr Peanut

I dont think you are in any position to talk having just read one of your other posts - ha ha

I think you may have missed the point Peter.[;)]

"I was certainly not critisising him for spending a lot of money on a car or anything else.
What I was commenting on was his somewhat flippant comment that a loss of £57,000 in depreciation was nothing to worry about. Thats just showing off but in rather poor taste I would say but my comment was made `tounge in cheek' as they say."

The garage is in Preston so if you do fancy it when you see it, you could suggest to "Armani" that you borrow it for a morning, and whip it round the corner to Hartech in Bolton for an inspection.

I still think the best way to buy these cars is privately from an owner that has owned it at least a couple of years, and who you can grill with a load of questions before you buy.

` Hello chaps.

One of my many winter projects has been the front calipers - lots of plate lift and corrosion. I've had them shot blasted and powder coarted, new seals etc.
Looking for some advice on the Porsche script - do I go decals or paint? Which will last?

Rich'

Robbo,
I live about 30 miles south of Preston just off the M6 and I have only had my '91 turbo for 3 weeks, but I paid £6k for that so might give you a comparison?

My car was judged by Hartech to be "a good one" when they did the belts for me, shortly after picking it up, but there were still various jobs that needed doing to make it 'right' - rear cambox gasket, new handbrake shoes & cables etc,

Now I just have the cosmetic bits 'n bobs to sort out.

I got a huge file of invoices dating back to '94 with my car along with 2 (count 'em!) service books with stamps going back to '91 -first book is full - so that sort of background info makes all the difference IMHO. If there is nothing like that with the car (especially at that price) then I would have reservations - gives you a feel for how the car has been treasured (or not[8|]) in the past. That said it is a 16yr old car, so condition is key!

Just my tuppence worth

Best of luck

I agree that it's over-priced by at least £1.5k.

Yes, but if the history folder shows that last year it had belts, chain, new cams, water pump, re-furbed calipers, new brake and fuel lines, a clutch, new tyres on re-furbed wheels, engine mounts, wheel bearings and cv joints replaced, just as an example, and the bodywork is really exceptional? Then it's probably £1.5k under priced [8|]

The ad never tells the full story!

Well I hope so! With the exception of new cams, wheel bearings and cv joints, mine has had the above done recently and the bodywork is unmarked. I shall be selling it soon...

Right, When I spoke to Amari yesterday I did ask quite a lot of questions & had him walk round the car.

He described the bodywork as 'totally spotless', which means it's either genuinely good or it's had recent paint. He went through the history file & it has a fully stamped up book with maindealer or independent stamps, lots of previous MOTs & invoices, most noteably one for the belts / tensioners less than 10k miles ago. I forgot to ask about the clutch.

I agree with it been overpriced, but if I were to buy it I wouldn't be paying the £6250 asking price [;)]

As for the colour, I hadn't initially entertained the idea of a white one, but now I've seen a few, I honestly think the lighter colours (especially white), suits the 944 shape better than darker colours.

I'll let you all know how I get on at the weekend.

Cheers,
Robbo

Definitley worth a look, and I hope he has described it accurately. Only you will be able to tell if that's the case when you see it in the flesh. The price is right for a dealer sale if it is as good as he says it is. He has to make a profit in that and also stand by any serious faults under the Sale of Goods act, a private sale would obviously be less

As for the belts, it is the date they were changed that is really important. If they are over three years old, regardless of mileage then you ought to think about changing them again.

Good luck

£6250 for a white S2?

Gosh! That does seem a lot - as everyone else has said ...

Yes, it's a dealer, and you will pay a premium for that. Make sure you know what you are getting for that, as some dealers are excellent with faults after sale, and some simply refer you to the warranty they sold you with the car (which is as much use as a chocolate teapot.)

Best of luck when you look at it. When you are there, see if you can find out the reg. mark as this may help idetify previous owners. (Better still if you can get a glimpse of the V5.)

Oli.

Don't think I will be going to see it! The more I talk to the owner the worse it gets!! Stated "Oh yes its got a service history" yeah stamped book up to 1997 which was 30,000mls ago [&:] but since then its had "two new big ends fitted and the clutch has been re-lined!" WHAT!!

Doesn't inspire confidence does it []
