Does anyone know what this is?

It's something to do with the Hamilton and Palmer alarm that would have been fitted to the car when it was imported to the UK and before it was first sold.

When I say 'something' it's because I think it's the ultrasound sensors but I'm not entirely sure. You'll find that the multicore cable runs up to the front of the car and plugs into the alarm control box in the passenger footwell (or under the passenger seat). I snipped the wire off and removed it as it clearly wasn't doing anything, and removed the alarm entirely a few months later.

That makes sense. I do have a Hamilton and Palmer alarm, so if it's part of that - I'll leave it alone for now!

Mark,

If it is an ultrasonic sensor then it'll be detecting any car thieves who dare to break into the space below your battery. Given that you probably don't keep anything of value there and hence aren't too bothered about the protection it's offering then you can safely cut it off and put it in the bin. Think of it as adhering to the Chapman Principle of 'Adding Lightness'.

The box for adjusting the Ultrasonic's sensitivity is usually in that area, I remember it being square though (on my 1990 at least) but its been a while since I looked, the actual sensors are in the vicinity of the rear side windows.

Definitely the ultrasonic alarm sensor control unit. Mine got damp from a leaking boot seal and I had to take it out of the car to stop the alarm going off all the time. Took me a couple of days to figure out what was going on and the only thing I could do to stop the alarm going off was to leave the car unlocked! It also tells the interior lights to flash on and off with the alarm....at least, mine did too! I've never replaced it but keep an eye out for a good condition (dry!) clean looking one.
