Does the 964 burn oil

Hi all, just though i'd ask does the 964 burn oil, as you know I have had all my leaks sorted, plus a service etc & I have done circa 1500/1800 miles tops, 2 have been long runs up north etc.

I noticed that the oil was low and the pressure gauge was on red, I thought initialy the fuse has blown but no checked the oil and it was near the low level of the dipstick, I was a bit surprised as i thought after such low milage this would not happen, no leaks and no smoking.

I Just thought I'd ask if this was normal running??

According to the Driver's Manual, Porsche expect the 964 engine to consume "up to" 1.5 litres/1000 km. The distance between the high and low oil level marks on the dipstick represents approx 1.7 litres, so if you reckon 1800 miles (approx 3200 kms) the spec would allow for up to 4.8 litres of oil to be used - so I reckon you're doing alright.

Incidentally, I'm hoping it was a typo about the oil pressure being on the red - I assume you meant oil level. Bear in mind that the oil level guage is only meaningful when the engine is idling at working temperature anyway and it should sit in the red for the most part - until the car comes to a standstill.

Its fine now its reading near the top since i put a litre in her, I am nipping to costco tomorrow to pick up 5 litres worth, should I get Fully or Semi Synthetic.

I just chucked in a a litre of Shell Helix 10 -40 I think for high performance cars Fully Synth,
 
The 964 engine was designed long before synthetic oils became common place. I use Castrol Magnatec 10W-40 (might be called Edge something now) which is NOT a fully synthetic oil. Many advocate Mobil 1 - and just as many reckon it causes leaks. Take your pick!!

I reckon you're better off to stay away from 0W oils - they are just too thin at low temperatures. 10W-40 seems fine unless your engine is well worn, in which case many prefer to use a slightly heavier oil - say, 15W-50.

Everybody has an opinion I'm afraid. It's your choice!!!

Reference your oil usage, please also bear in mind that there may have been a fair few air bubbles in the system after the work done and if you have had any internal engine parts replaced there may be some additional initial consumption during 'running in'. So I would carefully measure the next thousand and see how it is as you would expect lower consumption and it should improve after having the leaks fixed.

Regarding the oil, I have seen over the past 5 years many a discussion on synthetic vs semi synthetic. The majority view always seems to end up with semi synthetic 15/50 or 10/40. I've used these in all of my cars including the turbo's. With regards to fully synthetic opinion has ventured that Mobil 1 0/40 is to thin wasn't around I believe when the car was designed and has even been known to initiate leaks.
 
I agree with the usage figures. Will increase with track use or hard use, but not too much.
As for oil, I use Mobil 1. It is a thinner oil, so if there are leaks it will tend to find the gaps and run for freedom.
Others mentioned are a higher viscosity and this might be why others suggest it.
Mobil 1 is not cheap and this is another reason why some prefer it.

I don't think it will ever do your motor any harm, but it may not help your drive. Good luck with making up your mind.
 
Hi Chaps, thanks for that, I will call my Mech & see what he used in the recent service & go with that.

had the car 18 months now, still not sure I will keep her but she is running brilliantly[:D]
