Does this look a write off?

Hi All

Some one decided to modify my 996 today, so far they seem to have accepted blame, I am now thinking of which repairer to send her to,.
I am wondering if its going to be written off, as if that is the case then I will probably just send it to the insurance approved repairer, and start the fight for the correct payout.

Hi Kevin. Sorry to hear about your car. I'd say you'll be ok with that - unless there's other damage that can't be seen in the pic. It looks like the front PU and supporting struts will need replacing - but I wouldn't say that's a wright off.
Adrian.

Sorry to hear about that.

I had similar damage, although not quite as bad, to my '98 996 after driving into someone at the lights (stupid I know!). It needed quite a few bits of the front replaced, tub etc and the cost came to around £9k. It was fixed to a very high standard by Chandler Stewart in Tonbridge.

Good luck sorting it out.

Thanks guys I think you are right, its pretty bad and deep under the PU but I'm sure/hope these things are quite normal repairs, not looking forward to the process of dealing with the body shops but not quite the end of the world that it felt a few hours ago.

Ill update if anything surprising happens.

Hi Kevin. I see you're in Herts; find your local approved OPC repair centre and take it to them. The one in Bridgend (the nearest on to me) is like no other body shop that I've been to - they've got to be good to get approved! If someone else is paying it's got to be a no-brainer!

Ade.

Hi Ade
I'm afraid the closest to me is Premier Bodyshops in Luton and I've had previous experiance there so I will probably be looking at approved bodyshops a little further afield. [;)]

The standard and service of approved bodyshops can vary so thanks for your recomendation.

(edit for spelling)

The front boot section is a bolt on tub - the wings may be reuseable, bumper beam and PU are obviously to be replaced.

Approved Bodyshop guarantees you nothign when it comes to quality of workmanship i'm afraid - vetted they may be, but there are plenty of poor quality repairs froma variety of approved bodyshops across the country.

Totally agree with that, I had a scratch taken out at an approved bodyshop and the car came back with a tiger-stripe paint effect and a broken piece of trim. I had some accident damage repaired at another one and the work was excellent. As mentioned the approved stamp isn't a guarantee of quality.

Depends on the value of the car and what the insurance can get for salvage. Mine (997S) was written off only after I compromised on the valuation by a couple of £k but I didn't want it back. It looked a lot worse than yours and repairs came to about £30-35k (from memory) including VAT - that compared to an insurance valuation of about £47k and a cut-off for them of £45k.

The car was taken to Body Technics in Slough which was AMAZING!! My dentists isn't as clean and white as this place. My folks used to be in the Body Repair business and operated at a high level with insurance approval etc and I have never seen anything as good a this place. If it had to be repaired I'd be happy for it to go there.

Hi All

Car was written off with a value of £20k on a 1999 T 75K miles, I have been offered the option of buying back the salvage at £5k, very tempting but will allways be a Cat B, might be better to walk away.

Sorry to hear the car was written off. £20k for a 75k mile car seems like a good payout to me, but others will have more informed opinions about that. Also think that £5k for the salvage is a steal; I would have thought that it would scrap for a lot more that that (the engine alone would be worth a few grand for a start). If there was one near me for that price and I wasn't between houses I'd get hold of it and give it a go. How long do you have to think about it?
My guess for prices for other bits:
Wheels 400-500
Seats 500-700
Doors ?
Dash ?
wheel hubs/shocks/springs
calipers 250-350
CDR22 100
gearknob/handbrake 100-150 dependent on condition
etc.
I suppose the airbag deployed on this one? If not, and it's a three prong leather wheel then £400
On the other hand, there is the hassle of dismantling and posting the stuff out, and money is a bit tight out there at the moment.
Finally, if it were me I'd still manage to lose money on it 'cos I'd think "I might just use that 3.4 lump to upgrade my 2.5 Boxster..."

Looks like mine from a few years ago when a truck backed up into me, but not as bad as yours. 1997 Boxsters were not worth much back then, and I was afraid it would be written off.

That 1997 is worth even less today, and if it happened again today it would be written off.

I am considering a couple of options, keep it and strip it myself, sell on to another breakers or repair with s/h parts for a great track day car [;)]. it would be nice to see her back on the road as it was/is a great car.

Better days:

Hi,

When this happens you realise how great it is having the engine in the back.
A friend of mine had a very similar accident in his 996 a few years back, it wasn't a write off
and was repaired back to perfect condition and not by dealer, i say perfect as over 2 years later
he has had no problems what-so-ever.

I know a company called Auto-Audio in Park Royal London NW10, they do anything to top end cars,
very good to know as they have a lot of experience, have a look in there showroom.
they recommended ANG www.angservices.co.uk i know the website is not very good but they do
insurance work for Solus / norwich union. They are 1 minute walk from Auto Audio.
They have worked on Porsche, Lambos, Ferraris etc

how the hell is that a cat B?!?! looks like a D at worst.
Buy it back...... and then sell it to me for a quick profit.
If it is a cat D you can repair without a VICcheck. It's a money tree if you're clever.
