Does this sound like clutch is going

Evening All,

Have an issue when changing down gears. Clutch feels fine and all gears will select no problem apart from reverse which can take a couple of attempts to get in , but all other gears both up and down are fine but when changing down into 3rd there is a small vibration/judder from what feels like under the gear stick but when changing down to 2nd there is a massive vibration/judder from the same area. Also the bite point seems extremely high and a little stiff/sticky/jumpy and generally not smooth. ( what great description )

Any ideas what might be causing this. Help would be most appreciated as the rest of the car really is superb and want to try and resolve quickly as the rest of the car is excellent.

Cheers
Simon

Reverse is normal as it doesn't have synchro.

Is the vibration when selecting the gear, or when you raise the clutch after selecting the gear?

Simon, Lets just say I had some very similar issues as you describe, but mine made some strange vibrations changing down into 2nd and 1st, this got progressively louder as the clutch wore out and evently gave up. I also had problems selecting reverse.

Since the clutch has now been changed I no longer have any of those issues and reverse is selectable first time round. I would say your problem could be clutch related, especially if its not been changed in a while.

I also had a s/h gearbox fitted which may account for why mine no longer has issues.

To me it sounded like something was spinning up (but abrasively sounding) when releasing the clutch, do you have a noisy clutch release bearing also? When at idle open your drivers door and engage the clutch then release the clutch whilst in neutral, if there is a loud abrasive sound when you release the clutch but that goes away when you engage it then its probably the clutch release bearing. This bearing is usually replaced when a new clutch is fitted, a noisy bearing also suggests your clutch may be on its way out.

I'm sure there are more here who have more knowledge than I who may know better...

Have done that and yes it is noisy when releasing the clutch.

Any ideas on what sort of cost might be expected here for a clutch on a lux.

Part prices can vary wildly from month to month, but generally circa £400 for the parts and £400 for the labour

Certainly sounds clutch-ish.

Clutches are an easy but big DIY change. Search on here - they seem to have been discussed a number of times in the last 6 months or so.
