Does Tiptronic effect the Price?

Hi

Sorry if this is going over old ground, but I have a 3.2 cab for weekend use and have now started the search for a 993 for everyday use.

I was therefore wondering whether a 993 with Tip was worth less than a manual when I am negotiating, and if so roughly by how much? I am not a track magnate and will be using it for general commuting and the occasional "A" road blast.

Would welcome any thoughts

 
Yes the tip is generally less desirable and therefore the manuals command a premium over them. Just take a look around at prices the gap is quite considerable.
 
I recently traded my 3.2 for a 993 and spent some time over the same dilema. Yes the prices are less - about 10% i would say. However, I guess the logic is that you pays less and you sell for less so its less.
Having owned the car for two weeks I would say that the box is not necessarily the boring drivers device its often made out to be. My car is a Varioram and has plently of grunt, so much so that it will pull top from just over 1000 rpm. The auto box is fine as well and does not lurch like some folks say. So after a short time I would say go for it - but make sure you drive one of each first.

Although it is not the most important thing, is there much difference in fuel economy between manual and Tip ?

I have found an advert for a 1997 C2 993 with Tip which was originally supplied to Japan, coming to this country in 2001. The car has a service history sine then, with a major service at 42,000 miles in August 2009.

Is there anything I should be aware of or concerned about as it is a Japanese import?

It is also Guards Red, my 3.2 Carrera is perfect in that colour but a 993 in red seems to be more unusual. Is this a colour to be wary of?

Drive-wise ... I personally prefer a manual box... nothin g like heel-n-toeing into corners or any opportunity to downchange!! The "tip" doesnt blip the throttle for you ! But I think the Tip is faster in acceleration from 60MPH upwards...?

As long the Car is C16 you should be OK[;)] - any other code give a wide birth - however, do double check with you PC first. [:-]

If you were working in Japan and wanted a C16 model you could order one!

Were you not working abroad? Get your order in (99?) - The guy who sold me the 944 told me he did this to avoid tax duties[;)]

Where do I physically find the "C" (country) codes you refer to? There is not a service book with the car, so is it on the sticker under the bonnet?

Yes, sticker under bonnet is identical to sticker in service book.

Take another look at the 993 forum - The very top box is FAQ and most of the answers you need you will find in this section. However, other sections in these top boxes Buying advice etc are well worth a read - my top tip for you (unless you are a Porsche Techi) is to get a PPI on the vehicle by Peter Morgan - I think you will find this is money well spent.

I cant see why you should give a Japanese import or any other import a wide birth at all just because it does not have the UK registered refrence. I've had my Japanese RHD import on a 94 plate for 4 years now, It dosent suffer oil leaks, air con works perfectly, exact same spec as uk derivative but with a few extras like cruise etc, re-mapped by Chipwizard 3 or so years ago at 300bhp, does 5k a year and has not missed a beat.

Its probably another one of these rediculous comments as "you should only get a varioram" or "only get a tip" get a good car that has the spec you want, one thats been serviced and looked after correctly get it checked before you buy and pay what its worth. If you dont want an import dont get one, but dont damn things you havent had or without giving sound foundations of why not!!!

Porsche does attract a number of narrow minded people with blinkered views, discounting perfectly fine cars.

Hi Mike - You pay your money and take your choice - C??,colour,model,lhd,modified manual/tip etc the list is endless.
In my opinion its wise to seek advice from others in the know - of course some will tread more carefully than others - in my case
I sought advice from my PC and was given advice I have only repeated that in my recommendation - and added a 'however'[;)] which I have repeated above. (see post 11)
Whatever you drive - enjoy doing so in 2010.[:)]
