Donington Track Day

Just wondered if anyone is going on the 17th October. Thinking of doing my first PCGB track day. If anyone is going and indeed has done one before what do you think of the day and what should I expect.
If I do go ahead then will need to purchase a helmet, any particular ones I should look out for, and is it worth having a complete different set of wheels/tyres for the track day ( was wondering if the tyres the 924 series use would be worth looking at ).
Cheers
Simon

If you're going to do more than 1 trackday, then a spare set of wheels is a good idea. If your present tyres are reasonably worn I wouldn't bother though. I've found 944's to be reasonably gentle on tyres. If it's wet (as it usually is at Donington) then you won't get much wear anyway.

Get some tuition during the morning - should be some help in getting you round the right lines & not scrubbing off too much rubber as you understeer through the corners [;)]

I'm sure you'll find some more posts on trackday checklists - tyre pressures, pads, fluid, oil, coolant are the minimum - and make sure you know where your towing eyes are. [:D]

As for helmets - you need to try on plenty & find one that's comfortable. There are pros & cons for open vs closed face (Personally I'd rather not risk mashing my face into the steering wheel). Bike helmets tend to be cheaper & most have the BS Type A approval. (Bike vs Car helmets is another big debate).

and then get ready for the slippery slope of trackday expenditure and upgrades.....[:D]

PCGB days are generally well run and not too overcrowded. Is it an open pitlane day? If it is, then be prepared to be constantly overtaken by very experienced drivers in very fast cars so keep a constant watch on your mirrors. If it's your trackfirst day then I would suggest it is better to start on a sessioned event. This way you will have other novices in the same group as you and it will not be so intimidating.

If you do get hooked then it is cheaper in the long run to have a spare set of wheels with dedicated track rubber as the last longer and grip so much better.

The Club has a good range of helmets at £5 for the day, so unless your head is a very odd size or shape you should be fine. Try on lots until you find a comfy one.

Donington is open pit lane, but I just look for collections of very fast cars in the paddock and go out then [:)] PCGB days seem (to me) to be very kind to newbies and understanding of slower drivers, provided you return the favour by watching your mirrors and letting them past when safe.

I'll be there with a friend who is also new to track days - feel free to ask for a passenger trip. Look for a dark blue 996 Cab.

Most important though .... use the instructor. Tell Steve Kevlin when you sign on that it's your first track day, and that you'd like the instructor as early as possible. Best way to spend £20 IMHO - gets far better performance results that anything you can throw at the car.

I note you are from Derby as am I. Will you be going on the 17th?

Simon

I don't think so - I have a couple of upgrades planned that are eating into my track day budget - Donington is a great circuit though - we're very lucky having it just down the road

Cheers guys. Think I will bit the bullet and go for it. Hopefully see some of you there on the 17th.

Simon

I might pop along to take a look as it's only down the road. Home improvements are eating into my 944 buget this year full stop!
