door handle problem

Had a problem getting into my S2 this am, because the drivers door handle would not operate the catch. I've been noticing that the lever needed to be squeezed to its full extent to get it to operate.

Its was cold so suspect that this has someting to do with it.

So I opened passenger door and operated the lever from the inside with no problem.

Looks like I need to take the exterior handle apart and adjust the lever then, any one with any tips for the process?





 
I seem to remember this is a fairly well known problem so if you use the search function you'll probably come up with several hits. I'm afraid I can't for the life of me remember what the problem is though.
 
I put a recent post re locks/lock/barrels/handles on the 924 board. It may help.

Assuming it is the same design as other 924/924S/944 locks ......
Once you have the trim panel off etc and can see the assembly within the door you'll see a short vertical link (usually a 'golden' plated rod about 3mm diameter) with a black plastic balljoint threaded onto its lower end. If it is just wear and tear throughout the mechanism, then pop this joint off with a screwdriver and wind it up the thread several turns to shorten the rod and take up play. Snap it back on and try handle. If it makes no difference then you will have to remove handle assembly from door and look for loose pins/ broken springs/ broken components.
 
Usually they just stick. Have you tried lubricating it? If you thump the door near the handle does the release lever spring back?
 
Yup - they stick because they atract crud into the mechanism (the door is designed to have air flow inside it, allowing it to dry, but with air comes dust and dirt.)

Take the handle (and lock, if possible) off, clean it with some paraffin/gunk/jet fuel/cat pee/whatever, put some light oil on it and re-assemble.

You'll be amazed how much better it works, and how much more satisfying the 'thunk' associated with closing the door is. (And it's a quick and easy job.)

Just to echo the above comments, my 944S had been idle for a while before I bought it and the handles were very bad, they would stick in at the slightest provocation, I gave them a thorough squirt (of WD40 I think) and after a week or so they worked like new - they were so bad I thought I'd have to dismantle them but thankfully that wasn't the case.
 
just wana say cheers guys :D

worked a treat. took the handles off, used some degreaser and a tooth brush to clean it all. left it to dry for a day. then oiled it back up with 3in1 oil and it works perfect :D
