Door lock

Hi everyone it's been a long time since posting anything. However, I've been using the key access to my car for a while now as my electronic fob is shot. Bit of a nuisance though as the alarm goes off every time I unlock the car until I put the key in the ignition. Today though, for some reason my key won't work when trying to unlock the car. The key won't move when in the lock. However, it does move in the opposite direction.
Could this be that the lock is damaged or could it be linked to the electronics in some way. If I disconnect the battery for a short while and then reconnect does anyone know if this might work or have had similar issues.
Thanks

Hi Richard, is this an easy diy job?
Can the lock be accessed through the door handle surround or is it accessed by removing all the internal door linings etc which would mean renewing all the new door membrane panels etc to create the seal.
Any idea of costs,
Thanks.

On a further matter, when I get my fob renewed, will it work with the door lock defective?

Unfortunately you have to take the door card off to get the lock out. That said, you may be able to carefully peel bcak the corner of the membrane to get to the lock, without removing the membrane completely.

It depends on what is wrong with the lock. If one of the miroswitches has jammed, a new remote may lock the door, but it may also unlock automatically if the door lock is sending the wrong signals to the alarm module.

I'm afraid you are going to have to delve in to establish what is wrong. A new lock is £86.82+VAT, and the "book" time for fitting is about 1.5 hours.

Sorry Richard but when you say the door lock are we both talking about the barrel itself in the door handle or are we talking about the mechanism lower down where the door mechanism catches the main car u shaped bar.
It is when I put the key into the barrel it won't move so is it as simple as the barrel itself. If so, do I have to present my key to obtain the identical barrel?
Sorry if I sound stupid but I've seen some pictures and the whole thing looks quite complex.

It could be the barrel or the door lock. The barrel has a blade on the end which engages in the lock. If either the barrel or lock are jammed it will have the same effect. If it is the barrel, then you have to buy the complete backplate of the door handle. These are ordered using your VIN, so that you get the correct lock barrel for your existing key. IIRC they are about £175, but I will look it up tomorrow for you.

Edit: The backplate with stipulated lock barrel is £222.42 +VAT.

Many thanks Richard. This one may be more difficult. Need to think about whether I tackle this job or get the indie to do it when I gat a new key fob which I know is completely knackered. Many thanks for the help again. I think I will tackle the horn first. All the best.

Hi all, I don't want to hi jack the tread but I have a problem with my 996 that i have just bought that is quite strange. I can lock the door with the button on the key but when i open it again, the central locking only opens the doors and not the petrol cap, boot or bonnet.........anyone have any ideas as to how to sort this out? Obviously the biggest issue is the petrol flap as i cannot refuel and I don't want to break the flap pin!
