Door mirror blind spots

My 944 is the worst car i've ever driven for mirror blind spots. Now i'm driving the car every day in rush hour traffic there is often a car lurking in a blind spot that my rear view mirror or my door mirrors do not show. The worst by far is the passenger side door mirror where the mirror appears to be so magnified (much more so than the dirvers side) that it significantly narrows the mirrors field of view so much so it almost renders the mirror useless. All I get is a mirror full of rear wheel arch - which is great for stirring the soul but not for spotting traffic.

I've been wondering that if I got a replacement mirror from a LHD drivers door mirror it would be much more effective due to the lower magnification effect of the drivers door mirror. Anyone done or considered this 'mod'?

I think you have a "modification" already. The driver's side mirror is supposed to be 1:1 unmagnified (so you can judge distance accurately) and the passenger one reduces size by approximately 2/3 so it has a wider field of view.

Hi Scott

I will echo Fen's remarks as I certainly don't have any issues with my mirrors.

Perhaps at some time a "Stick On" replacement mirror glass has been fitted to the passenger side.

Or of course you could just look over your shoulder to check your blindspot properly before you change lanes....

Every car driver should be made to ride a motorcycle... it would make the world a safer place!

I always use a "lifesaver" when I pull out. I get heart failure every time I do it in the Turbo though because I invariably catch sight of the 968TS wing out of the corner of my eye and think someone is there. Maybe after a few hundred more miles I'll remember [:-]

Fen, I'll take the wing off your hands for a tenner to help out a mate [8D]

I've never had a problem with my mirrors either. I too think yours must already be modified Scott

Ditto.... 'though I don't tend not to rely on my mirrors alone. All cars have blind spots somewhere, so the only way to be sure you saw what you thought you saw is to have a look.

I agree that 944's aren't as convenient in traffic as a nice 4x4 though. [;)]

Having a look over my shoulder before changing lane is something i've always done and is the only thing that has prevented me from pulling out on someone so far. I'll have to look into the mirror thing then but I can't think why someone would mod a mirror to narrow it's field of view - especially since it seems they must have gone to extreme lengths to get a non-std mirror to fit. Some people are strange!

Halfrauds do a nice line in replacement 1:1 wing mirrors. Blue tinted as well, make a paper template of the mirror, take it there and youll get a good match.

They won't be heated though...

They will if you stick them on top of the original mirror - well sort of - as one of Beaky's previous owners did. [:'(] Another thing on the long list of "Things to Do", a proper repalacement is so expensive though.

don't find the 944 any worse than the Boxster for blindspots. nfact the mirrors are quite good and helpful for reversing

I've got to agree with the first poster, as I've had so many near misses in the 6 months of ownership - however it has had the desired affect in that I now look over my shoulder every time. I know for sure that the mirrors are OPC, as they cost me a fortune to have fitted in the last service, so perhaps I'll have to play more with the adjustment!

My commuting car, Golf, I have absolutely no issue with and just use the mirrors to look back but now my experiences in Black Beauty have made me look over my shoulder in that now too!

Anyone using tear drop style mirrors like to comment on the performance compared to standard.

Upon further inspection the drivers mirror does appear to be 1:1, and in reality I don't really have any problems with the offside but the passenger mirror is definately magnified and appears to be a pukka part - there certainly isn't a second mirror stuck on top of an original. I'm going to keep my eyes peeled for a LHD drivers mirror for a transplant. I had a whole Discovery in my nearside blind spot today - and i'm talking the new model.

Scott you just need a passenger glass from a RHD car. A LHD glass will just be 1:1 anyway.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]I have teardrops and they are not so easy to set - if you get it right they are slightly longer which is better but because they come to a point you can see slightly further out but in a much narrower vertical plane. I didn't like them at first but now I'm used to them they're fine.[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

The last time I had to buy a new one it cost me a tenner [8|] ; admittedly that was for the 924, but the design is very similar.
