door mirror repair

Does anyone have any advise on how best to disassemble a door mirror?

Problem - I am told the fixing inside the mirror has come undone and the mirror casing has now come loose from the bit screwed to the door. Looks very awkward, is it best to have done by someone who knows?

What year car?

Early mirrors the glass pulls off. Late mirrors, there is a slot underneath, and you have to use a screwdriver to turn a bezel/bayonet thingy to release the glass. The mirror mech is then held in place by three 8mm AF set-screws. If it is teh top and bottom half of teh mirror that is loose, this I understand is a pain - some on here have done it before, and can explain, I haven't had to. If it is the mirror loose on the door, then I had one car on which the previous owner had "missed" the screw hole that holds the mirror in place and screwed it down between the door skin and captive nut. If this is the case you do not need to dismantle the mirror, just push the top half back out of the way and you can get an allen key in to tighten/remove as applicable.

Oh yes, forgot to mention, 944 1986.

I know its not the screw hole missed, this bit is securly fastened to door. Its where this bit joins the mirror casing. The mirror casing is held on only by the wiring loom. There is a slot under the mirror so I assume this is where I can get the glass to release. I didnt know how to get to the three bolts.I have been told its a pain to disconnect the wires.
 
yep, an awful lot of cars abppear to have been bodged at some point in their life and the wires cut. the problem is the connector won't pass through the tube. A solution is to go and find a model shop that sells brass tube, and find a piece that just fits over the male part of the connector pins. Use this to squeeze the tabs on the connector pin in and the pin can be removed from the back of the connector housing, problem solved.
