door plastic membranes

Will any plastic sheet do to replace the membrane behind the door car, what can i use to stick it on and are they important or can i leave them off

If you leave them off then in time the door cards will get damp, warp and disintegrate.

I can't help thinking that sticking some plain plastic sheet into place, including all the cut outs would be a tedius job. The real things are not partcilualry expensive from an OPC, it was a while ago I bought some, but I think they were in the region of £15 which I'd say is money well spent.
