Door & Rear Shelf Speakers - - Engine Cut-Out!?

In prising off my worn-looking speaker grilles for a nice coat of Innotec, I found every one of the speaker cones shot to pieces.

The tweeters are fine (which I would partly expect from the different construction). So now wondering what I should be replacing them with and where to find them. I hear also that rear shelf speakers that fit are impossible to find due to the small depth requirements.

Any advice or experiences? Would be nice to get it all working as it should.

New engine fire-up problems at bottom of thread...

Similar situation here, mine still had the paper blankpunkts that it left the factory with. I wasn't interesting in spending loads of money to get super hi-fi sound just an absence of farting noises and retaining the factory look. the fronts are a standard round fit 13cm or 16cm I forget which, I just went to shops and got them to open all the boxes until I found ones that were the closest physical match (mounting holes and depth) to allow me to keep the factory grills. the factory ones have separate tweeter but I just went with a coaxial (ie tweeter in the middle). the rear shelf speakers are the tricky ones, 4x6 is an increasingly rare size, and the frame holds a 10cm woofer and a small tweeter, most new 4x6 are oval coaxial. Original factory fit are blaupunkt with 123x75mm mounting holes - 163x106mm frame - 50mm deep After a good amount of searching here are the most likely replacements JBL GTO6428 - 122x75mm holes - 160x113mm frame -44mm deep (no grill so you'd have to dremel down the frame from 113mm to 106mm to take the factory grills) Kenwood KFC-4675 - 123x73mm holes - 158x103mm frame -190x124mm grill - 48mm deep - these are nice because they have their own fairly understated grills. (looks to be discontinued but you may find retailers who still have stock) BUT I've just gone for these: Blaupunkt GTx 462 - 123x76mm holes - oval so no frame - 53mm deep there's no frame with these onse just the oval speaker so I've dremelled out the factory frame so I can use the grills (the mounting holes should line up well). They should turn up tomorrow and I'll be fitting them tomorrow night so we'll soon see if the plan works. There are plenty of other 4x6 options JVC,Alpine,Pioneer,Kicker,Boss etc but I couldn't find dimensions for them online. Also JL audio, boston acoustic and infinity kappa do 4x6 "plate" speaker replacements but I couldn't get dimensions on these and I couldn't find a decent UK supplier and their a bit pricey.

Nice one - thanks. I'd be interested to hear how you get on with fitting your new Blaupunkt's. Marcus

Im going for these... When I install them I will post pictures and a review so you can have a good look, and if your close, you can have a listen[:D]

lovely speakers those, have come up on the rennlist and pelican forums, was tempted but i couldn't find dimensions of the plate and I wanted to be sure the factory grills would fit nicely especially if they're coming all the way from the us. let us know how they go.

that went OK :) and they sound fine - fill out the sound nicely. nothing to get super excited about but they do the job just fine. they lined straight up with the factory holes

I removed the o/s rear and driver's door speaker units (to check part numbers, sizes etc), then was about to nip out but no engine fire-up this morning - turns fine. Crazy, but took a wild shot and reversed any recent work since last use by replacing the knackered speakers and now she fires up! Am I right in thinking that somewhere along the (speaker circuit) line there's an ignition/fuel/sensor relay dependency? If so what's the proper way of closing that circuit if I wanted to remove all the speakers completely? Thanks..

I just checked the fsm and the wiring diagram is pretty clear , as you'd expect, speakers only connect to the stereo head unit. One possibility is you disturbed other wiring unit the rear shelf, on mine the alarm sensors run wires under it. If you wanted to really rule it out , a 4ohm resistor in place of the speaker would simulate a speaker as a temporary.

Thanks, Indeed I believe I probably did disturb something. Took the speakers out again and all seems fine now. An after-market Clifford imboliser has been installed and also. Quite likely then, as you mention, I may have disturbed some other alarm/sensor cabling (other can clearly been seen wondering around underneath the rear speakers. Incidentally, I checked a few replacement speakers and I'm quite surprised how heavy the damn things are.. All speakers added up, we're looking at around 10Kg plus the head unit/cd changer then the power amp under the drivers seat..
