Door Seal Replacement

Steve Humphreys

New member
I am working my way through the seals in the car and want to replace the outer seals on the doors---they are held in by the allow trim strip--the manual is fairly concise here--it says remove strip--it is not clear how to do this--anyone done this?

Also I want to take out the lock barrels for the doors--is there an easy way to do this other than to dismantle the enire door?

Any help gratefully received.

Many thanks

Steve

Steve,

The outer strip just pulls away from the door. It's held in place by a couple of metal "prongs" - if you wind the window fully down you can get your fingers under the strip and just lever it up with your finger tips. If I remember correctly, you don't have to remove it completely - if you lift the rear end enough you can slide out the rubber sealing strip (called a scraper) and slide in the new one.

I've not removed the door handles so I can't comment. I know Kevin Senior has painted his so he might chime in with his superior knowledge.

Regards

thanks for that the moulding prised straight off--with a bit of encouragement---highlighted two other problems--though---the felt on the inside of the door had rotted and the seal just under the front quarter light was hard--so it will need to be replaced at a later date.

I have read throgh the manual again and step 52 is the removal of the door handle--which follows removal of window frame--removal of window and removal of electric window mechanism--it will be fun--unless someone has a better idea---I can't see how to get to the rear most securing nut for the door hanle without removing the window.

Thanks

I can now answer my own question--there is no need to take out the window--but I already have. Using an 8mm socket and having disconnected the central locking feed from the rubber mount that takes the slack out of this feed it is possible to remove the door handle.

On the positive side, having done this I can now replace the felt on the outside of the window. However, I will now face the issue of aligning the window.

Can anyone recommend lubrication for the window channels--I am sure grease isn't good enough as it will become less viscous in the cold.

Thanks

Steve
