Door speakers

Hi All,

As far as I can find out there are three different types of fitment for the 944 door speakers Mine's an 86 and has the "waffle plate" Type which basically fit's flush with the door, sometime after 86 they switched to a different style which had the speaker sat into a plastic carrier which is screwed into the door with a mesh that snaps on to the plastic carrier. this sits proud of the door by about 6 mm and allows the fitting of slightly deeper speakers (the speaker backs onto the window runner, but not in the Cab models which are lucky in that they can fit much bigger speakers). The third type was the pod that fits below the arm rest and was an option I believe (It's also standard on the 968?) What I'm looking for is the second option which will allow me to fit better quality 6X4 Speakers with bigger magnets. So if anyone has some spare or knows where I can get them I'd appreciate a heads up.

Rather than start a new topic I thought i'd post here as it seems relevant.
Has anyone got suggestions of good replacement speakers that have been fitted in the doors without 'hacking' the trim about too much. I have a particular fancy to Alpine or Infinity speakers. Also, what can be done with the rear speakers, are they easy to get to and anything to look out for when removing them.
I have always been keen to fit my own systems.
The car is an '89 Turbo.

The front's are pretty easy to change, I have some nice Pioneers that will go straight in to any oval dashed 944 if you are interested? (not sure about the older interiors)

I'm about to fit some JBL's which have required a small amount of hacking.

The rears come in two styles, one has a 6X4 aperture (My 86 has this) with plenty of space behind it because of the rear wing bulge later on they changed to a 5" circular speaker I think but not sure about this, whatever you want to do there is plenty of room for improvement as the OE speakers fitted are not very good by todays standards.

It all depends on how good you want your sound quality? I picked up a set of Infinity speakers that sound miles better than the original fit ones that were in the car. They are not however, any good for your average Sarfend (Southend-On-Sea in normal person speak!!) Boombox cruiser! They just take it to what I would consider a decent sound quality, with out needing to bugger up the door.

(85/1/2 oval dash) As far as fitment is concerned they fitted straight in to the original apertures and only sat proud by about 5mm. To be honest I spaced the grills with some washers, but with the give in the pinstripe door coverings you can barely see the gap.

If you want the part number of these speakers let me know and I will drop them out again and let you know.

I was just looking for a set for mine today.

They're standard 6 x 4 speakers, so there is some choice (even if there's not loads).

The cheapest I've found is here. They've got a selection from £20 up. The sites not the best to navigate as you have to go into each manufacturer, and then scroll through the list (usually in the "custom") section. To browse a few sets at once, go here

Annoyingly, speakers are much cheaper in the US (see here - of course they don't post to the UK!!)[]

The originals are quite slim - Pioneer do a direct relacement and Infinity do one which can, with a bit of fiddling be made to fit.

Take an original to a good ICE dealer

I fitted some Kenwood "dual mags" in the doors of my 968 . They are the same size openings as a 944. They sound better , + are a slim speaker...

Nice to find someone else who has a 2.7 to compare notes with!

The wheels work well, not really much tramlining that you'd notice and they fill the arches giving a much more purposeful look to the car, especially with 255's on the back!

What work have you had done to your's?

Like the idea of the dual mags, I think I'll take one of the old one's along to an ICE dealer and compare the sizes etc...
